About Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center
Brahma Kumaris Australia was established in Sydney in 1975 after a young traveller came across this spiritual wisdom in London and brought it back to his homeland. A few years later, Dr Nirmala Kajaria from the Brahma Kumaris in was asked to base herself in Sydney as the BK senior teacher, while the young traveller moved to South America to open a BK Centre. Meanwhile a second BK student returned home from London to establish a centre in, Melbourne.
Since these early days, the Brahma Kumaris have shown a solid commitment to having representation in major cities across Australia. Brahma Kumaris Australia has centres in every state, as well as three spiritual retreat venues. Our National Coordinating Office is based at Five Dock in Sydney’s inner west.
More than 100 meditation teachers and volunteers take care of all programmes, administration, publicity, catering and maintenance at each of the Brahma Kumaris’ centres across Australia. This dedicated team works tirelessly for the benefit of their neighbourhood and strive to be samples of how to lead a balanced life using meditation as the foundation. These volunteers are regular students who are committed to supporting these venues. Many of them also have paid jobs and contribute financially to the ongoing maintenance of these places as another expression of their service to the community.
Sanctuaries of Peace
Brahma Kumaris Australia events are offered in our centres, retreat centres and class locations. Sometimes community rooms, libraries and other public places are used to reach local communities. Some have been able to provide this service in their own homes, some in community rooms. This trend has expanded the geographical opportunities available to would-be meditators in various city suburbs. The teachers in class locations are experienced long-term BK meditation practitioners and regular students and offer the same standard of events as those offered at our centres.
Open six days a week, our Meditation shop in Fitzroy (Melbourne) offers an oasis to escape from a hectic day or a busy mind. Passersby may drop in during working hours and on weekends. Meditations are available on request in this peaceful setting. There is no fee. Relax and unwind while browsing meditation books, CDs and DVDs and pick up the latest information on upcoming events. There is also a bookshop at Five Dock.
National Coordinating Office
In keeping with the growing demand for our community programs after many years in Ashfield, we recently sold that building as well as the Leichhardt premises, and purchased the former Inner West Courier office space in Five Dock, Sydney for our National Coordinating Office. All BK administration activities for Australia are managed from this location. The Board of Directors and the National Co-ordinator/Chief Executive are also based there.
Regional Coordinating Office
Australia played a prominent role in opening BK centres across the Asia-Pacific region and continues to support activities in the region. The Regional Office, also based in Five Dock, acts as the regional communications hub and provides spiritual sustenance through BK senior teachers, who visit countries in the region regularly.
