The Canadian Yoga Institute is a non-profit charitable organization (charity # 868910811 RR0001). We began our organization in 2000, with a pilot project teaching classes at a space rented from the UofL. From that early project we formed a small non-profit organization to ensure that our community would have a genuine yoga centre that fostered the healthy lifestyle of yoga. It was quite a journey to get from that point to where we are today. We have moved a few times, and made due with less than ideal situations as part of our growing pains. It has been a worthwhile journey.
Nearly 16 years later The Canadian Yoga Institute is reaching many people in our community with the gift of yoga. Many thanks to resources donated by numerable local businesses, and a few Grants from Alberta Sport & Recreation, TransCanada Pipeline, Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commision, Alberta Community Development, and the countless volunteer hours from individuals who all had a hand in creating this lovely refuge for our community. CYI is proud to team up with many different community groups and charities through the year and offer karma yoga classes, like Toys for Tots, making connections and partnerships with both Lethbridge Food banks. Why Should I Do Yoga at The Canadian Yoga Institute?
Some people start doing Yoga to tone their bodies and lose weight. Others want to alleviate symptoms of stress such as anxiety or depression. Indeed more and more doctors recommend Yoga to people with everything from back pain to heart disease and even cancer. Yet ask most people who practice Yoga what it is or what it does for them and they are at a loss to pin it down or define it.
Each of us is unique in our ever-changing structural make-up, and so it’s important to find a teacher and style of Yoga to meet your unique needs. Developing a Yoga practice sets a strong foundation for all of the activities in your life. It’s about developing a relationship with yourself and taking responsibility for your health. Whatever your reasons for beginning Yoga, you’ll feel better, you’ll look better and you will respond to the world around you more effectively.
