The History of Pilates Pilates was created almost 100 years ago, first as a method of rehabilitation and then developed as a body fitness technique in its entirety. At the origin of this method, Joseph Pilates, born in Dusseldorf in 1880, devoted himself from a very early age to the practice of various sports in order to avoid contracting tuberculosis. After studying anatomy in Germany, he became a nurse during the Great War. It is here that he develops and refines his method. In 1926, he retired from Germany and opened his studio in New York City. It will be a great success with the artists, actors and dancers of the time (Lauren Bacall, Martha Graham, George Balanchine). He institutionalized his method with Contrology his first book exposing his techniques. He continued to teach and enrich him until his death in 1967. A true pioneer in physical training because he sought harmony between the body and the spirit, Joseph Pilates leaves us a legacy of a clever and revolutionary method. Pilates uses a series of exercises designed to strengthen and stretch the body. These exercises mobilize the spine and allow for flexibility. Our courses are designed to provide you with the attention and help you need. They are an ideal complement to your exercise program.
