Karna Purana : Ayurvedic Ear oiling It is the method where medicated oil is instilled and filled in the ears. Karna purana can be done in both diseased as well as healthy condition as a part of daily regimen for prevention of diseases. Procedure: After proper massage and sudation done around the ear, the patient is asked to lie down in lateral position. The prescribed sneha (ghee or oil) is then filled with the help of a dropper. An ear plug in placed in the ear cavity. The same procedure is followed in the other ear as well. Patient has to stay in this position for at least 10-15 minutes. Ayurveda suggests ear shall be filled till 100 matra in shiroroga, 500 matra in throat related diseases, and 1000 matra in shiroroga. Then remove the oil from ears carefully. The word ‘Avagaha’ means to immerse. Avagaha sweda is a type of sudation therapy where the patient is made to sit or lie in fluid like decoction, warm water etc to produce fomentation to the body. Avagaha is the best means of invigorating the whole body and mind. It is the means of deep relaxation to one’s body in the most traditional way. Procedure: The Whole Bath-tub is filled with herbal decoction or any suitable liquid like milk etc selected according to the condition of the patient and disease. Abhyanga(massage) is performed with prescribed medicated oil around the umbilicus up to the thighs or all over the body according to the condition prior to the treatment. It can be performed without Abhyanga in certain conditions. The patient is made to sit or lie down in the tub containing medicated Liquid in such a way that the whole body upto the neck is submerged in the liquid in the most comfortable manner. Shastikshali pinda Sweda/Kizhi/ Navarakizhi: Inducing perspiration by using heated round packs or bolus of rice is referred to as ‘Shashtikashali pinda Sweda or kizhi, also popularly known as Navarakizhi. Passive heat or fomentation given to a part of the body or the whole body with the help of a bolus containing medicated leaves is known as patra pinda swedana. Patra-medicinal leaves Pinda – bolus Sweda-fomentation Procedure: Leaves of medicinal plants have properties of relieving pain, stiffness & swelling. These leaves in Ayurveda are said to contain Vata alleviating factors known as Vata hara. Such leaves are freshly collected and chopped into small pieces. Then it is fried in medicated oil adding turmeric, lemon in it. The mixture is filled in a piece of cotton cloth and a bolus is prepared out of it. On one side a pan is filled with little quantity of oil and kept on mild fire. The passive heating of bolus is done and gently applied to affected part of the body. In such a manner the procedure of patra-pinda sweda is carried on. Nadi swedan is a unique form of swedan procedure where sweating is induced by passing steam over the body part by using a special instrument known as nadi sweda yantra. The steam is passed through a rubber tube fitted to the instrument and it is an easy method of applying heat to a localized part of a body. Procedure: Application of oil to the body part that is to be subjected to sudation(sweating) treatment, followed by passing the steam to the same part with help of a tubular pipe is the procedure of nadi swedan. The procedure of applying heat to the sacral or lumbar region by retaining warm medicated oil within a specially formed frame in this area is popularly known as ‘Kati Basti’. This is form of giving fomentation to localized area. Mainly Housewives who are more prone to kitchen work get strenuous pain in their low back work due to continuous standing for long time and lack of bending movements. Continuous sitting in one certain place also causes low back pain many times. Kati basti is the best remedy for them. The healing properties of herbal oils used for this basti deeply clean and fortify the blood, build strong muscle and connective tissues, and lubricate the joints. In today’s times people are getting more workaholic which involves a continuous and glued sitting position, more exposure to computers and lack of body movements, in such people the problems of the spine, muscles and skeletal tissues of neck and shoulder arise. Greeva Basti addresses these issues effectively. The word Greeva refers to neck and Basti stands for retaining something inside mainly medicated oil. It is an Ayurvedic neck care and basically a hot oil therapy. Greeva Basti is bathing the neck region with medicated oil or freshly prepared herbal decoction. The procedure does oleation and sudation around the neck region simultaneously. Procedure: The person undergoing Greeva Basti is made to lie face down on the massage table. The dough is prepared out of black gram flour or whole wheat flour.It is then made into a small ring of four to five inches in diameter which is placed over the neck to cover all the vertebrae of the neck and 2-3 vertebrae of the thoracic region. After it is glued with some water to make it leak proof, lukewarm medicated oil or the decoction of herbs is slowly poured into it. Janu basti is one of the upakarma (sub-type) of Panchakarma. The word janu refers to knees and Basti stands for container or retaining something inside mainly the medicated oil. This procedure is done in order to strengthen the knee architecture i.e muscles, joints and improvise the functions of knee joint thereby preventing it from further degenerative changes. Procedure: The patient is made to sit in a comfortable position with both legs extended. The mould is fixed on one or both knees made with the help of the kneaded black gram dough of suitable height. Medicated oil of suitable temperature is poured inside the prepared wall and retained for about 30-40minutes. The warmth of the oil is maintained throughout the procedure. Netra Tarpan: Ayurvedic Eyes Rejuvenation Netra means eye and Tarpan means giving strength to the eyes. The medicated ghee is poured over the eyelids in an enclosure built around the eye out of wheat flour. It is said to be an excellent treatment to improve vision and clarity of the mind.
