Contrology, developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century, is what we know of today as the Pilates Method. It is a system of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen, align and balance the body. With systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable for fitness, wellness, sports training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds. The exercises are performed on the mat (floor) and a variety of classical Pilates apparatus. The spring resistance of the apparatus uniquely translates through the joints, muscles and connective tissue of the body, providing the long, lean muscle quality for which Pilates is known. Movements are coordinated from a strong, flexible core, and flow outward through the limbs.
