Ayurveda is a science of longevity has its origin from Vedas. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word, derived from two roots: ayur, which means life, and veda, which mean knowledge. Vedas are ancientn literary works done by sages through their deeper studies of ‘Brahman’ that is the entire world. Principles of Ayurveda are mainly from Rigveda and Adharva veda.
According to Ayurveda, life is the union of body, mind and prana (life force). That is the reason why it is a science in its complete holistic manner. We all in this living world are mainly for performing ‘Dharma’ (It is the principle of harmony and regularity, and thus provides a moral basis to all actions) which indeed requires balance of body, mind and prana.
Ayurveda is the system of medicine incorporating centuries of wisdom in it. The emphasis here is on ways to promote health rather than just treat disease. The beauty of the system is that every individual is unique rather than being just another case of particular disease. It is one of the few systems of medicine taking mental, emotional and spiritual well being into account. All the suggestions and remedies prescribed are totally in conjunction with nature.
Yoga is not only a physical exercise as it is taught in the West. In it is a science practiced for thousands of years for mastering the body-mind-soul and for living a life of harmony and peace. Imagine a perfectly healthy body and mind, functioning at their maximum capacity without a least a trouble – no sickness, no disease, no stress – that’s what yoga can do for any human being at any stage of life.
The Aim of Yoga
The ultimate aim of Yoga is to experience the Truth, by realizing the true nature of our ‘Self’ and the Universe. Then one can become free from the chain of cause and effect (Karma) which brings us to earthly life again and again. In that highest state of yogic realization, one can regain one’s real nature – Eternal Existence, Supreme Wisdom, Absolute Bliss (Sat-Chit-Ananda). According to Yoga, the ‘self’ (soul) is timeless, unchanging and free of sorrows. Yoga is therefore a spiritual quest. However, along the path of yoga, the yogi also gains health, happiness, tranquility and wisdom, which are indicators of progress and an encouragement to continue the practice.
According Yoga, health is not just a mere absence of disease, but a positive feeling of well-being in body-mind-soul. The literal translation of Yoga is harmony – harmony of body-mind-soul, harmony in the relationships with the rest of living beings, and at the highest level harmony with the entire Universe.
