What is it?
Pilates is a body conditioning program which focuses on developing controlled and balanced movement. It was first conceived in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates and incorporates exercising with spring loaded equipment in functional movement patterns. Pilates teaches the body to work from a stable low back and pelvis region, allowing you to move with greater efficiency and with overall improved body mechanics. More recently Physiotherapists have combined their knowledge of spinal dysfunction with the Pilates concepts to provide safe and effective exercise programs to assist with the management and prevention of low back pain and other spinal conditions. Pilates uses a wide range of exercises from very easy to very hard. These exercises can be tailored specifically to meet your individual needs.
How it works
Pilates works by helping to activate the correct deep abdominal and back muscles that provide support to the low back and pelvis. These muscles wrap around the back like a natural back brace. At Silas St Physio + Pilates we utilise a Real time Ultrasound, which is a machine designed to allow the Physiotherapist and patient to see the muscles working. It ensures that the patient is doing the correct level of work with their core muscles which initially can be difficult to feel.
