I chose to study at MAHARISHI YOGA in Rishikesh initially on recommendation from a friend. Before coming to MAHARISHI YOGA I had been travelling in India for 6 months, trying to get as much experience of yoga as possible, trying many styles, ashrams and teachers. The teachers were my priority in making my decision; not the accommodation, food or otherwise, (although these were really great too! bonus). I had not read any reviews online. My expectations (although it is of course best never to have any om shanti) were far exceeded. I came for a trial class of Ashtanga with Neeraj another excellent teacher, and realised that it's the real deal - similar to the Mysore style I had enjoyed. Without doubt all the teachers are true professionals, and the knowledge they share is inspiring, humbling and life-changing. The course is well structured, balanced, and gives a holistic well-rounded baseline into physical, philosophical and spiritual aspects of yoga not just the asana. The anatomy and philosophy classes were stimulating and entertaining. The material covered is fresh and not repetitive (as it can often be in India for Western audiences). The other students provided an encouraging, empowering space to practice teaching. The food is varied, fruit in the morning, not spicy, and is much better than what is often served as traditional ashrams. The rooms were clean and comfortable and I felt in luxury after six months travelling India, where things like laundry often seem hard tasks. I believe this course strikes a good balance, offering an authentic Indian yogic experience while also actively striving to meet Western expectations and satisfy its students. Thank you MAHARISHI YOGA.
