What is Meditation?
Meditation is a unique way to bring your mind to the present moment and to allow us to experience true peace (easier said than done!) and an insight and realization of what the mind really is.In Kagyu Samye Dzong Dublin, we practice the traditional Buddhist method of meditation brought to us through our lineage and offer instruction to whoever would like to learn how to meditate. This type of meditation is known as Shinay, or Shamatha/Calm Abiding, and was taught by the Lord Buddha over 2,500 years ago.
Beginners meditation instruction is offered on a Saturday morning at 10.30am – 11.45am and on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm – 8.45pm. These classes are ‘Drop-in’ – no need to book. The Saturday morning class is also followed by a short session of meditation from 12pm – 12.30pm – suitable for those who are beginning their meditation journey.
In these sessions you will be taught the correct posture – this is vital to ensure you don’t develop bad habits from the beginning and get the most benefit from the session. Also how to work with distraction – a constant problem in these busy times.

Meditation is a natural state of the human mind—at rest, open, alert. The practice of meditation has been taught for over 2,500 years as a vehicle for realizing the beauty and magic of the ordinary world without aggression or manipulation.
The teachings of Shambhala Buddhism emphasize the potential for enlightenment inherent in every situation or state of mind. Through discipline, gentleness and a sense of humor, the practitioner is invited to let go of conflicting emotions and wake up on the spot.
Mindfulness/awareness meditation is the foundation of all that we do at the Shambhala Meditation Center. This ancient practice of self-discovery is rooted in the simple but revolutionary premise that every human being has the ability to cultivate the mind’s inherent stability, clarity and strength in order to be more awake and to develop the compassion and insight necessary to care for oneself and the world genuinely.

The Sanctuary Meditation Center
The Sanctuary is a meditation and mindfulness centre in the heart of Dublin city and a very special place, its vision is – to be STILLNESS.The story of the Sanctuary begins with the Foundation of the congregation of the Religious Sisters of Charity, by Mary Aikenhead, in 1815. On 29th January 1819 Mary Aikenhead moved into the old manor house at Stanhope Street
Establish the first novitiate of the Sisters of Charity Develop St Mary’s Training School and Orphanage Work with the sick & poor in the Grangegorman area and surrounds
In 1987 the Religious Sisters of Charity gave this convent and grounds to Focus Ireland to provide housing for the growing number of people experiencing homelessness in Ireland. It was one way of continuing their work of “giving to the poor, what the rich could buy with moneyâ€.
Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy, a religious Sister of Charity, is the founder of the Sanctuary. Her vision for the Sanctuary was to provide a reflective contemplative, beautiful place for people in the midst of our frantic busy, world. A place and space where they could be re-energised and nourished in body, mind and soul. In keeping with their vision of helping people to live to their full potential, the Religious Sisters of Charity donated another portion of the old manor house site to the Sanctuary in 1998, for the development of the Sanctuary buildings and gardens. The vision of the Sanctuary is “to be…STILLNESS…in the world…†While its Mission is to develop and provide opportunities for individuals and groups to explore their inner wisdom and spirit, to find stillness, live harmonious and balanced lives, and to work towards the building of a caring, inclusive and fair society.
Since 1998, the Sanctuary has been developing a range of courses and workshops in the area of mindfulness and meditation, yoga and movement, creativity and well-being. In particular, it has developed a range of programmes working with young people and those who are a vulnerable stage in their lives. The Sanctuary now has a complete programme of day, evening and weekend courses and workshops from both secular and spiritual perspectives.
About the Sanctuary Logo
The Sanctuary logo was created in 1999 with colours of deep yellow with a strong orange circle, illustrating harmony and peace; gentleness and strength; movement and openness; silence and stillness. Over the years its shape creatively included images of some of the activities that take place in the Sanctuary, each one inviting a response in the exploration and search for stillness of mind and body. The logo also represents an image of the Sanctuary Garden.
