Imagine waking up in the rainforest near Monteverde, Costa Rica to the sounds of tropical birds and monkeys, as gentle rays of sunlight filter through the trees. Does this yoga retreat sound like a dream? We think so! Doors to the Wild Self: Costa Rica Cloud Forest Retreat will be a week of living up close and personal with nature, disconnecting from work and technology, and allowing the verdant life and flowing waters of Costa Rica to nurture your mind, body, and spirit.
One amazing adventure we offer in this biodiverse paradise is tree climbing with ropes and safety gear, in order to get up close and personal to the majestic giant strangler figs! This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hang out in the cloud forest canopy with epiphytes (the special plants growing from the tree branches), birds, magical clouds of mist, and so much wonder! Our local, knowledgeable tree-climbing guides are the people who first started climbing the strangler figs with ropes, and later founded the nonprofit project Palo Vivo. Supporting Palo Vivo helps bring outdoor education and conservation education to local school children. Tree climbing will be fully supported with expert guides, ropes, and gear. A safe but thrilling adventure!
Also included in this retreat is a guided ecology tour in the magical Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. For many, this is a reason in its own to travel to Costa Rica. We’ll spot many birds, animals, and plants, hopefully even the rare and mystical Resplendent Quetzal!
Just like all of our retreats, this is a substance-free, recovery-supportive environment! Although you don’t have to be sober in real life to come on our retreat, you do need to be willing to take a break from any recreational substances throughout the entire retreat experience. We believe everyone is recovering from something, whether it’s addiction, stress, trauma, eating disorders, or just the disconnection of life in our busy, high-tech world. Bigger Life Adventures strives to create a safe and open space for vulnerability and openness about each and every healing journey. Our retreats don’t include formal recovery meetings, but our guests are always sharing and learning from each other as we all work to use the tools of yoga and community to become better and live bigger lives.
Private or double rooms are available. All rooms a queen bed, a single bed, a private bathroom with solar hot water shower, locally made biodegradable soap, and an amazing view down through the valley of San Luis and out to the Gulf of Nicoya.
From your balcony, you can view rainbows and a never-ending variety of tropical birds! Upstairs rooms have patios with outdoor furniture and downstairs rooms have patios with hammocks. Upstairs and downstairs rooms will be assigned on a first-booked, first-choice basis!
Sometimes guests are even greeted by monkeys right outside their rear balcony in the morning.
Chef Zach will be serving up delicious, plant-powered, locally-sourced meals to nourish us throughout the retreat. All meals will be fully vegan! Local coffee and a selection of teas will be available every morning. The quality of the produce in Costa Rica is unbelievable and we love showcasing wide varieties of local fruits and vegetables from local farms. Zach serves a selection of international cuisine, Costa Rican classics, and many creations of his own. If you are gluten-free, no problem! Talk to us in advance about any other dietary restrictions to see if Zach can meet them.
Zach's first cookbook is coming out soon and guests regularly RAVE about his food, even if they aren't vegan in real life!
For travel, you’ll fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport in San Jose (SJO). There will be shared shuttles to take you up to Monteverde (a 3-hour trip, approximately 60 USD per person). You are recommended to give yourself extra days in Costa Rica if you are able, as arriving a few days early will make your journey more incredible and less stressful. Please check in with the organizer before booking plane or shuttle tickets to confirm your plan will successfully get you there at the right time! You will want to land in San Jose by 10 am on the first day of the retreat at the latest!
