The Atmananda Yoga Sequence Studio is a boutique, multifaceted studio that holds a frequent RYT certified 200 & 500 Hour teacher training programs, 6 days a week of many various scheduled yoga classes, a fully operating kitchen and lounge, Ayurvedic treatment center, and four spa rental treatment rooms in the heart of Gramercy Park near Union Square of Downtown Manhattan, New York City.
Atmananda’s mission is to provide individuals with the tools and skills that enable them to develop their full potential and inspire others to do the same.
“The reason why I created the sequence was because I was seeing yoga students all over the city getting hurt. Well the reason for this, I realized, was because various styles of yoga paid little attention to alignment nor creating a sustainable practice.
In my experience in New York, students were not being protected and many people would end up needing knee or shoulder surgery after a three years of so. I knew I had to provide my students the knowledge to protect themselves. The best way to help people understand why these injuries occur is to go backwards, showing exactly what movements lead to their different aches and pains and learn in detail how to correct those mistakes. I needed to create a sequence that was very conscious and very cautious in its approach, so that I would be able to break down the specifics of alignment in detail. I do not want my students to practice for three years, I want them to practice for a lifetime. I have been doing this for 20 years now and my students are happy and healthy, especially the ones who have been practicing with me for years. Something must be going right!â€The Atmananda Yoga Sequence is the body of knowledge, experienced through Hatha Yoga, Iyengar Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga, combined to create a Vinyasa flow. The sequence is composed of the six groups of asanas, including standing poses, balancing poses, spinal twists, inversions, back bends and forward bends, all working to leave the body completely open and refreshed. We use the breath and attention to detail as the foundation of the flow to develop a healthy yoga practice that can last for a lifetime. We believe that through learning proper alignment our bodies will begin to safely open and through practicing a consistent sequence, rather than looking around to see the next pose we will begin to move internally quieting our minds.
Seventy One classical and powerful postures make up the sequence and help you connect with your body. We use the Sun Salutations to warm up, various hip-openers to lubricate the joints and release tension, forward bends to calm the mind and fire the digestion, backbends to energize and open up the heart , arm balances to tone the body and inversions to reverse the impact of gravity. The movement initiates with the breath to bring awareness and connect to the vital energy of the body, Prana.
The most important element of the Atmananda Yoga Sequence is physical alignment. The appropriate placing of the feet and hands and engaging the right muscles play a crucial role in protecting the joints and gently guiding the body deeper into the poses
