If you want to feel Tricia Donegan’s heart – throbbing with rhythm, sparkling with pink electricity, and dedicated to a cause that makes her city strong – just roll out your mat at Bikram Yoga Lower East Side’s monthly Nite Sweats supporting the Lower East Side Girls Club. When your heart meets hers, you’ll understand why Bikram-Yoga-the-Tricia-way is one of the most sought after hot workouts around.
Tricia’s heart landed in New York City in 2001, and she began teaching yoga the following year. In 2003, she opened Bikram Yoga Lower East Side on a once forbidding block of the Lower East Side. Since then, yogis aspiring and advanced have flocked to the studio for Tricia’s particular combination of compassion, outrage, humor and hard-core fitness training. Tricia inspires people to work harder than they ever have through the supportive, compassionate inspirational – and hot! – environment she has created. Tricia has inspired a cult-like following among her students including celebrity clients like Lady Gaga.
Tricia started her career in the restaurant business. In 1994 President Clinton awarded her a grant to open a restaurant in the Atlanta Empowerment Zones. She turned that one restaurant into three, ultimately employing 100 people from that neighborhood.
The stress of running a business at that hectic pace led Tricia to her first Bikram Yoga class in 1999. The kick-ass workout appealed to the former college athlete and in 2001 she became a certified instructor. In 2010 Tricia completed Dharma Mittra teacher training, deepening her dedication to cultivating compassion through yoga. She also holds certificates of training in Street Yoga, Karma Kids Yoga, and Little Flower Yoga. She developed the first Kids Yoga program in Brooklyn at the Williamsburg Northside School in 2007.
For Tricia, success is predicated on the growth of her students and the health of her community. Her monthly Nite Sweats party has raised more than $25,000 over the past four years for the Lower East Side Girls Club. In 2012 Tricia joined the Girls Club’s Board of Directors, and will soon be directing their in-house yoga program. In 2009 Tricia began work with Street Yoga, a group that teaches yoga to youth and families struggling with homelessness, abuse, addiction and trauma.Tricia resides on the Lower East Side with her sometimes sweaty but always fantastic daughter, Lula.
