Pilates The Pilates System of exercise was pioneered by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s and for many years has been used as a form of higher-level exercise by ballet dancers and other performers. It has become a method of rehabilitation exercise over the last 20 years especially in the USA where Joseph Pilates lived but also in Australia. Pilates is a series of exercises or movements of the whole body with the emphasis on control of the movement, maintenance of good posture and flexibility. The exercises tend to be against low load and repeated often rather than concentrating on single areas of the body with pure strength “grunt†gym type exercise. The aim is to build a “coordinated, efficient strength†with good “core†control. Pilates as it is taught in Australia today is influenced by physiotherapy research into exercise for various spinal and limb conditions. Many of the exercises taught at our clinic are adaptations of original Pilate’s exercises taking into consideration the muscle and joint problems of our clients. Pilates involves mat exercises, and exercise on equipment such as the “reformerâ€, “trapeze tableâ€, and “exo chairâ€. Many of the traditional Pilates mat exercises are harder than those on the equipment. This is because the springs can be used to assist control of movement as well as resist movement. Pilates exercise has been used successfully in rehabilitation for spinal pain, sciatica, arthritic conditions, scoliosis, postural problems including headache, work injuries, sports injuries and post hip, knee and shoulder surgery. All clients are first assessed by our physiotherapists and then have a program designed for their specific needs. Exercises are then taught one on one for a few sessions and usually clients then join a small group. Classes are run through out the day, early morning and evening. Class numbers are kept small and are well supervised by physiotherapists to ensure individual attention and regular progression.
