About Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat

Sivananda Yoga

We teach a traditional, exact, and easy-to-learn system that aims to create a healthy body and mind that naturally leads to spiritual evolution.

Sivananda Yoga is based on the teachings of Swami Sivananda and provides an integrated approach to self-transformation and, ultimately, God-Realization. It begins with basic practices, summarized by Swami Vishnudevananda as the Five Points of Yoga, that create a foundation for a yogic lifestyle and prepare the body and mind for advancing on the spiritual path. Philosophically, Swami Sivananda taught a yoga of synthesis, drawing on four complementary paths: Karma, Bhakti, Raja, and Jnana Yogas.

About the Ashram The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat provides an immersion into the daily practices of a yogic lifestyle. We are a traditional yoga ashram for contemporary yoga study and practice. Surrounded by the bounty and beauty of nature, the ashram is a place where people come from around the world to expand and deepen their knowledge of yoga.

The Five Points of Yoga

What is yoga?

Yoga means union of the mind, body, and spirit with the Divine. While this refers to a certain state of consciousness, both individual and universal, it is also a method to help one reach that goal. The Five Points of Yoga taught by Swami Vishnudevananda provide a clear and practical method for contemporary people to use:

Proper Exercise (Asanas) – Yoga poses help develop a strong, healthy body by enhancing flexibility and improving circulation.
Proper Breathing (Pranayama) – Deep, conscious breathing reduces stress and many diseases.
Proper Relaxation – Helps keep the body from going into overload mode, easing worry and fatigue.
Proper Diet – Eating simple, healthy and vegetarian foods that are easy to digest notably have a positive effect on the mind and body, as well as the environment and other living beings.
Positive Thinking and Meditation – These are the true keys to achieving peace of mind and eliminating negativity in our lives.
Sivananda Yoga classes include the first three points: asanas, pranayama, and relaxation. Learn more about yoga classes at the ashram.
The Four Paths of Yoga

The Four Paths of Yoga provide individuals with a clear way of living that promotes peace and mindfulness to counteract day-to-day trials and tribulations. The Four Paths give options that fit different human temperaments and approaches to life and are taught and practiced in a variety of ways at the Yoga Retreat.

Karma Yoga (the yoga of action) teaches to act without egoist expectations in all endeavors of daily life ~ home, work, school. It is a good path with someone who is outgoing and enjoys a certain sense of spiritual activism to help others.
Bhakti Yoga (the path of devotion) is a good path for someone with an emotional nature and enjoys prayer, worship and seeking God through unconditionally loving others. Bhakti Yoga is a growing path around the world.
Raja Yoga (the science of the mind) is the path that takes us on a comprehensive journey to understanding our mind and thoughts. Through mental control, we are able to gain control of the physical body and the life force energy known as prana. This is a good path for those who are interested in meditation and its effects on the mind.
Jnana Yoga (the yoga of knowledge) is considered a good path for those with strong intellectual tendencies as it requires great strength of will and mind. Using Vedanta as a vehicle, the inquiry into the individual nature is the key to this difficult path. It is best undertaken after some of the lessons of the other paths have been well understood in order to move along towards Self-realization or profound spiritual awakening.

I visited this authentic ashram for a Yoga R&R back in January of 2011! I love the location, which is only accessible by boat. The morning meditations, yoga deck overlooking the crystal clear water, and 2 yoga classes a day are fantastic! I look forward to visiting again. Thank you!

What a stunning place to stay! Location is superb with beautiful beach on the north side and a wonderful fibrant harbor on the southside of this awesome tropical island. You stay between a lush tropical garden, eat delicious organic healthy and wholsome food and meet wonderful people from all over the world. It doesn't get any better! Absolutely recommended for everyone!

I think that the fact that I keep returning says it all. It is a second home although I can only come during the summer since I am a teacher. I'm looking forward to June and July so I can "recharge" for another year.

Jerome Rama Geraghty

A serene and relaxing environment surrounded by beautiful palm trees, gardens and crystal clear waters contoured by golden soft sands. Immerse yourself in the warm sunshine and soothing soft Atlantic breeze as you grow your practice amidst a welcoming, friendly and supportive community of fellow yogis.

A beautiful place to rest and rejuvenate. I stayed five nights in a tent hut and was very comfortable. I visited on the vacation program and only followed the satsang and yoga schedule when it felt right for me. I hope to return many times!

I visited the Sivananda Ashram in January 2014... the place is magical. I learned a lot about yoga and meditation in my five days there. My only complaint is that the food was not organic (or locally sourced) but it was very delicious and prepared with lots of love. Beautiful sunsets, beautiful people, beautiful place.

Sandy Nelson

I had a wonderful week away at Sivananda in February 2014. A very peaceful setting on a beautiful beach with very special people and lovely vegetarian food. I had practiced yoga on and off for years, without making much progress. The morning beginning yoga class was amazing. The teacher stressed over and over that yoga is not a competitive sport - it is about connecting with and listening to your own body. It inspired me so much I have kept up a home practice for nearly 2 months and it feels so good. It was a life-changer for me, and I hope to return every year for a recharge.

Nadine Skale

What a wonderful and very special and spiritual place! I enjoyed everything about my stay here - the satsang, the yoga classes, the workshops, the food the accomodation, the beach... What is truly amazing is that I am still carrying that inner peace - even after the flight home and the first day back at work. I will be back!

Yasmin Rudolph

Just came back from a weekend visit with some lovely girlfriends. What a wonderful place this is. The classes, lodgings, food, surroundings were all 5 star. Spent 48 hours here and left feeling serene, rejuvenated and full of love for the world.

Love the Sivananda Yoga Bahamas retreat!! - the location is exquisite, the grounds are beautiful, the people are amazing, love the variety of guests speakers, the veg food is delicious (stay away from the warm homemade bread they make daily if you don't want to gain weight), the variety of accommodation offers a variety of cost options, tradition is maintained with twice daily satsangs, evening Gita Parayanam, pujas etc. Every year I see that they are making improvements - I've come 6 times, next year will be my 7th visit, God willing.

Stacey Pack

I completed the Teacher Training course recently. The quality of teachings and overall experience was outstanding. I am planning my next course and very much look forward to returning to Sivananda Ashram.

Casa Libre

We use the temple for praying and meditation. The trip to the retreat is our ritual. The food is magical. And we always walk back home. It truly is a special day when you go to the retreat. We love it, and we crave it.

Dear Yogis! The Ashram Retreat is such a gorgeous, beautiful paradise. First, I was a little bit disappointed about the weather when arriving at Nassau, as the applications said it will rain all the time. Then I arrived at the retreat, and I just forgot the negative thoughts. This place is so lovely, so you can forget everything around you. Luckily the sun was joking about the application and it was shiny for a few days. I loved the workshop with Dr. Steven Weiss, but also mentors like Susan, Beata and Brett were so lovely and gorgeous. There are so many great experts (beside the ones I mentioned) who share their knowledge with us. Arrival and departure are well organized, and by boat and taxi service, even you leave at night or in the early morning before sunrise. I also loved the food! I was worrying about being hungry all the time as there is only breakfast and dinner. But, I didn't get hungry! At this place, thank you to the Karma Yogis too, who cooked so good delicious meals and did the dishes. Well, I will come back, the next time for a longer stay! Om shanti!

Sandy VanDerzee

I haven't even left yet and I'm planning my next visit. The most relaxing and intellectually stimulating place on earth! The food is fabulous as well. Maybe I'll be a Karma Yogi next....

As a Senior Yoga Teacher who teaches worldwide, Sivananda was by far one of the most profound Yoga Teacher Training I experience worldwide. Highly recommend it. The program was challenging, traditional, authentic, and full of love. I had the honor of doing Karma Yoga (Seva) for several years in NYC and Canada before I embarking on my Teacher Training. It gave me a solid foundation in how to teach this holistic, scientifically proven healing practice to those willing to learn. After all these years, its still the most profound TTout there and the best of over 7 TT programs that I have trained and certified in. I humbly look forward to continuing this journey at ATTC. Om Namah Sivaya. #yoga #powerofthought #meditation #mantra #sivananda #PranavaYoga #YogaAllianceUS #YogaAllianceUK #LatinaYogini

Third time at the Ashram and each time it keeps getting better and better! Highly recommend for those who are looking to deepen their yoga practice. Staff, volunteers and visitors were all incredible, as were the yoga classes, the workshops and the satsangs.

Elie Amaral

I decided to go for a week for a much needed personal break and to improve my yoga. I extended my stay to 13 days and wished It had been longer. The most incredible, and transforming experience I found and starting loving myself again! Thanks to all the incredible souls; staff, volunteers, students and guests! I'll be back soon!

Just got Back from the aashram, was here from May 5th to May 12th 2016. Great Place, Great yoga program and awesome people, Chef Pranav is amazing so is his team. Two things and observation: 1) People fill the plates with food and waste half of it this should stop absolutely unacceptable. 2) Too much of loud talking all the time, its okay to chant mantras, music etc but non stop talking without even thinking there could be people around who want calm and peace, you want to keep talking find a place where there is no one around and talk but in all public places in the aashram including the dining area, kindly maintain peace and QUIET, it will do you good and connect you with ur innerself trust me.

I just finished my Yoga Teacher Training at the center in the Bahamas. First of all, I have to say the yoga teaching was world class. Souria was phenomenal both as a teacher and a person. Her two assistants Bargavi, Barbiti were amazing. Their warmth and kindness was so genuine. I have to admit I was sceptical and it took me a while to settle in. The schedule was rigorous. But the training was incredible, the food spectacular. Thank - you Gigi Cohen and Ambica!! The setting ,world class. I am an almost vegetarian and a non coffee drinker now. I would go back in a heartbeat for the yoga retreat!!!

I just left a 6 night stay at the Ashram and must say it exceeded my expectations. I took the Positive Thinking Course and Rukmini was insightful, energizing and a well versed teacher. I have never been so relaxed in my life. The food was hands down awesome, I looked forward to every meal and the creativity that would come out of the kitchen. I stayed in an Om Hut with use of the shared bathroom. This is an ashram, not a resort, and it feels sacred, special and is a place for all to come and experience. I can't wait to return.
