Sivananda Yoga

We teach a traditional, exact, and easy-to-learn system that aims to create a healthy body and mind that naturally leads to spiritual evolution.

Sivananda Yoga is based on the teachings of Swami Sivananda and provides an integrated approach to self-transformation and, ultimately, God-Realization. It begins with basic practices, summarized by Swami Vishnudevananda as the Five Points of Yoga, that create a foundation for a yogic lifestyle and prepare the body and mind for advancing on the spiritual path. Philosophically, Swami Sivananda taught a yoga of synthesis, drawing on four complementary paths: Karma, Bhakti, Raja, and Jnana Yogas.

About the Ashram The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat provides an immersion into the daily practices of a yogic lifestyle. We are a traditional yoga ashram for contemporary yoga study and practice. Surrounded by the bounty and beauty of nature, the ashram is a place where people come from around the world to expand and deepen their knowledge of yoga. The Five Points of Yoga

What is yoga?

Yoga means union of the mind, body, and spirit with the Divine. While this refers to a certain state of consciousness, both individual and universal, it is also a method to help one reach that goal. The Five Points of Yoga taught by Swami Vishnudevananda provide a clear and practical method for contemporary people to use:

Proper Exercise (Asanas) – Yoga poses help develop a strong, healthy body by enhancing flexibility and improving circulation. Proper Breathing (Pranayama) – Deep, conscious breathing reduces stress and many diseases. Proper Relaxation – Helps keep the body from going into overload mode, easing worry and fatigue. Proper Diet – Eating simple, healthy and vegetarian foods that are easy to digest notably have a positive effect on the mind and body, as well as the environment and other living beings. Positive Thinking and Meditation – These are the true keys to achieving peace of mind and eliminating negativity in our lives. Sivananda Yoga classes include the first three points: asanas, pranayama, and relaxation. Learn more about yoga classes at the ashram. The Four Paths of Yoga

The Four Paths of Yoga provide individuals with a clear way of living that promotes peace and mindfulness to counteract day-to-day trials and tribulations. The Four Paths give options that fit different human temperaments and approaches to life and are taught and practiced in a variety of ways at the Yoga Retreat.

Karma Yoga (the yoga of action) teaches to act without egoist expectations in all endeavors of daily life ~ home, work, school. It is a good path with someone who is outgoing and enjoys a certain sense of spiritual activism to help others. Bhakti Yoga (the path of devotion) is a good path for someone with an emotional nature and enjoys prayer, worship and seeking God through unconditionally loving others. Bhakti Yoga is a growing path around the world. Raja Yoga (the science of the mind) is the path that takes us on a comprehensive journey to understanding our mind and thoughts. Through mental control, we are able to gain control of the physical body and the life force energy known as prana. This is a good path for those who are interested in meditation and its effects on the mind. Jnana Yoga (the yoga of knowledge) is considered a good path for those with strong intellectual tendencies as it requires great strength of will and mind. Using Vedanta as a vehicle, the inquiry into the individual nature is the key to this difficult path. It is best undertaken after some of the lessons of the other paths have been well understood in order to move along towards Self-realization or profound spiritual awakening.

I just left a 6 night stay at the Ashram and must say it exceeded my expectations. I took the Positive Thinking Course and Rukmini was insightful, energizing and a well versed teacher. I have never been so relaxed in my life. The food was hands down awesome, I looked forward to every meal and the creativity that would come out of the kitchen. I stayed in an Om Hut with use of the shared bathroom. This is an ashram, not a resort, and it feels sacred, special and is a place for all to come and experience. I can't wait to return.

I just finished my Yoga Teacher Training at the center in the Bahamas. First of all, I have to say the yoga teaching was world class. Souria was phenomenal both as a teacher and a person. Her two assistants Bargavi, Barbiti were amazing. Their warmth and kindness was so genuine. I have to admit I was sceptical and it took me a while to settle in. The schedule was rigorous. But the training was incredible, the food spectacular. Thank - you Gigi Cohen and Ambica!! The setting ,world class. I am an almost vegetarian and a non coffee drinker now. I would go back in a heartbeat for the yoga retreat!!!
