A particular kind of place for a particular kind of person. The type of place that is too much yet too little at the same time.
The resort location is absolutely beautiful, that was the main enjoyment of our stay. It was in the clouds when we arrived which was really cool and the clouds cleared the next morning, allowing us to see all the way to Nicoya Bay and the Pacific Ocean. This was booked for us on the last night of our honeymoon in Costa Rica. It is nice that it is close to the SJO airport, which I think is why it was chosen for us.
The Retreat truly is a wellness spa, but none of the services are included in the $700 a night cost. All the meals are separate costs. A nature hike is $25 and the least expensive yoga class is $100. I was very surprised there wasn’t an included daily yoga class offered.
You do have to throw all toilet paper in the garbage and not the toilet, but the toilet paper offered is not great. The bathrooms are oddly setup, with half a shower door and a small step (not an actual step but the ground lowered) getting out of the shower so water soaked the whole area for us as our shower didn’t drain properly.
It is a grain free, mostly dairy free and plant based menu. You do not get to choose the menu, but they did trade out the sea bass in my dish for steak for me which I appreciated. Dinner is $57 a person and there are no other places around so you kind of have to eat here. Coffee is served from 6:30-7:00 am (no coffee in the room) and breakfast starts at 9. The egg nachos were surprisingly good.
We did get a free crystal with our stay which tells you the kind of place it is. It’s not for the average Joe and though we did appreciate the beauty of the resort, we would not recommend it for anyone looking for a “normal” luxury hotel stay.
