I spent 6 days at AmaTierra on a yoga/wellness retreat and it was far beyond my expectations. I decided to go on this trip alone because I wanted to quiet my mind and free myself from every day distractions. I went to explore within and find a connection to my spiritual or higher self, and maybe have a few conversations with God. AmaTierra provided the facilities to do just that and more. The beautiful yoga studio with its stunning view of the Costa Rican mountains is breath-taking. There is a hammock in the corner, which is perfect for a nice cool-down after a swim in the pool or a walk on the trails. Meditation is after sunset, so the studio is subtly illuminated with candlelight. The cabinas are quaint and comfortable. They each have their own private porch and entry-way. I really appreciated the space and privacy between cabinas, because I was able to practice my guitar out on the porch without feeling like I might be disturbing someone. Jill and Bob were very warm and welcoming, as was the rest of the team. Their staff prepared the most healthy and delicious meals. They served fresh organic fruits and vegetables, delicious soups and salads, and delectabledinners. I always left the table feeling full and satisfied. What I didn’t expect was to find such a peaceful flow of energy that was constantly changing at AmaTierra. This was particularly due to the different dynamics of guests coming and going. What I loved about this experience was that I was on my own retreat. I did not start with a group of people that arrived on the same day to participate in the same retreat. It was very much an individual journey in which you would collide with others’ journey every now and then, most often at meal times. Everyone would come together to break bread and one evening we sang songs while Jill sang and played the piano. It was lovely. My only disappointment is that I had to leave. I could have easily stayed another week, if not longer. Needless to say, I will definitely be back!

"I am so grateful for my week at Ama Tierra. What a slice of heaven! The hospitality of Bob and Jill, the experience of community among the guests, stunning mountain view, perfect weather, fabulous food, inspiring open air yoga pavilion, and our various day trips, made it a unique experience of "Wellness" - restoration and inspiration. It was an ideal vacation destination for my daughter and I. Would love to return! ”

Feel at home cradled by nature amidst the mango trees and sounds of the living forest in your simple, elegant suite. Allow yourself to truly relax in the comfort and peace of the mountains that Costa Rica is famous for. Tastefully designed with unique decor to allow you to enjoy the serenity of your surroundings, each Suite comes with its own bath tub, private terrace and garden with outdoor seating. Hardwood furniture and a ceiling made of teak brings the ambiance of the forest into your room. The sleeping area has a comfy queen-sized bed, and an additional double bed can be arranged in the living room if needed. Ceiling fans, a refrigerator, coffee/tea maker, phone, complementary snacks and TV/DVD player. Choose a movie, free from over 250 in our collection, make your stay even more inviting. Settle in to a cool evening with a bottle of Chilean Cabernet and watch the sunset from your private terrace. In the morning, awaken to the sounds of nature. Take a walk to the stream or hike to where you can see the Nicoya Peninsula in the distance. Meditation is an extra special experience here in Costa Rica.

How to reach Ama Tierra Yoga Retreat & Wellness Center

Directions for the slower, meandering but paved all the way road: Take the road from San Jose to Ciudad Colon. Once you're in Ciudad Colon, look out for a sign saying "no hay paso" that means you're going on to a one way street. Instead turn right at the gas station and then left at the next street and you will see a green AmaTierra sign up high (on a car wash building) stating you are 35 KM from the Hotel. Go to the top of the hill thru the town of Cuidad Colon and turn left before the road turns to dirt, following paved road. You will see a University of La Paz (Peace) sign on the left. Make sure you follow the road out of town (do not turn right to the U. of Peace), but veer right after that sign and go towards Puriscal. After about 20 minutes, you will arrive in Puriscal. About 300 meters past the gas station on the right, you will see a sign for Turrubares/Orotina/Jaco - turn left there, in front of the Red Cross/ICE building. Follow about 3 blocks past the church, and just after the stop light you will see a white sign that will say Turrubaris/Orotina/Jaco then you MUST turn right after the sign and take this paved road past the cemetaries, continuing on to AmaTierra. The Hotel is located 17KM or 20 minutes once you leave Puriscal. We are on the right side of the road 2KM before San Pablo and you will see a Green AmaTierra sign 200 meters before to let you know you are close. It is easy to find and the road is paved the entire way - simply look for the living green fence and wooden gate. If the gate is closed, just honk and the guard will open the gate.
