Who was Joseph Pilates?
Joseph Pilates, born in 1880 in Germany, a puny and fragile boy, decided very early to compensate for these difficulties by becoming an athlete and expert in the anatomy of movement. He was also a skier, diver, boxer, self-defense instructor for the London police ...
The First World War had a decisive influence on his research. First a prisoner, then a nurse, he developed exercises to compensate for the losses and muscular scars of the injured and immobilized soldiers. Using straps and springs attached to their beds, he creates his first machines, based on the principle of resistance and assistance to movements. All the trained prisoners who survived the Spanish influenza pandemic who decimated thousands of people in 1918, his work began to be recognized and he founded his own studio in New York. It was first of all the dance world (Martha Graham, Balanchine ...) who understood the impact of his work on the dance movement.
Joseph Pilates continued to teach until his death in 1967 and left behind some heirs. It was not until the Hollywood stars discovered this technique in the 1990s that the general public finally had access to it.The Pilates Method is a set of physical exercises that soften and tone the body in order to rebalance its alignment.
This method aims at the awakening of the center of the body, source of energy and stability. Joseph Pilates called the center of energy the center of gravity of the body, located under the navel, and composed of the abdominal muscles as well as the deep muscles of the perineum and the spine.
The Pilates, re-educates the body, also calms psychic tensions. This is why the practitioner feels during the sessions a physical as well as emotional well-being. The Iyengar method emphasizes precision in postures, correct alignment (standing and on the ground). They often use accessories to allow each person, at any age, level or physical condition, to enjoy the benefits of Yoga.
The Sivananda method represents the classical Yoga method by also integrating breathing and concentration / meditation exercises.Postures (asanas) work every part of the body by stretching and toning the muscles, joints, spine and all the skeleton, they also act on all internal organs, glands and nervous system. In combination with proper breathing and they harmonize and calm the mind, reduce the symptoms of stress and bring more energy.Classes complete with guided relaxation .
