The word yoga means union and is derived from the root yuj in Sanskrit, meaning bind together. What this refers primarily, the effective union of humans with the Universal.
Yoga is considered one of six darshan (view) of Hinduism. The fundamental text of Yoga is the Yoga Sutra attributed to the sage Patanjali. We still call this system Raja Yoga or Royal Yoga. The author indicates that darshana aims at achieving unity and outlines ways to achieve it.
The focus is on the effort of the man and his self-discipline, by which it can obtain the concentration of the mind. All this aims to unify the mind, reduce dispersion and automation that characterize the daily consciousness.
In yoga, the human condition is rooted in an illusion man believes that his mental life is identical to that our self is profound appeal. Now, these are two related but different realities. The way to achieve the Deliverance by the Raja-Yoga , then, is to suspend the psychic functioning. Indeed, the mind is of a personal nature and therefore limited, it does not capture the broader dimension of reality.
The awakening occurs when we built this truth and when the mind recovers its initial release. It is an awareness of a situation that already exists.
Thus, we can say that the aim of Raja Yoga is to change the normal consciousness by a consciousness that can achieve this metaphysical truth. To achieve this, yoga takes as a fundamental means of concentration.
The first, Yama (refrènements) handles relations of the individual with his environment. These simple rules can be applied to any individual not only the disciple of yoga. These rules are to not hurt any being, not to lie, not to steal, not to be possessive and sexual restraint.
Then, Niyama (observances), suggests some disciplines that advance the disciple. This is a series of cleaning the body, contentment, enthusiasm ascetic study of doctrine and finally an awareness of the divine aspect of each action taken.
It is emphasized that these first two steps are not of the order of morality, but are primarily intended harmonization of the psyche, in order to cope with the steps of Ashtanga yoga in the best conditions.
Asana (posture) is defined by Patanjali as being stable and comfortable. Indeed, with the asana avoids the irritating sensation of fatigue and nervousness hundreds of body parts. It regulates physiological processes and thus enables the attention to deal exclusively with the fluid part of consciousness.
Initially, the asana is uncomfortable and even unbearable. But after some practice, the effort to keep the body in the same position becomes minimal. It is of paramount importance, the effort must go, meditative position must become natural, and it is only then that it facilitates concentration.
