Sivananda Kutir situated on the banks of the holy river Ganga, nestled among the Himalayan Mountains makes the perfect setting for yoga practices. Swami Vishnudevananda took charge of the ashram in 1991. Since then the ashram has expanded significantly within the confines of a small area. Previously the ashram was under the direction of Swami Akhandananda. It is located in the village of Netala, 8 km north of Uttar Kashi on the Gangotri Road.
Sivananda Kutir offers Teacher Training Courses (TTC) and Sadhana Intensive course from April to November each year. Prior booking is essential as all programs and courses are limited to a maximum of 30 students.
Swami Sivananda
Swami SivanandaOne of the greatest Yoga masters of the 20th century, Swami Sivananda, is the inspiration behind the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres. The teachings of Master Sivananda are summarized in these six words: Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize.
His Early Life
Born in 1887 in Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu, South, Swami Sivananda whose name was then Kuppuswami, was a brilliant boy at studying as well as gymnastics and naturally inclined toward spiritual and religious practices. His parents were very devoted to Lord Siva and Kuppuswami was eager to join them twice daily for worship (Puja) and Kirtan (Mantra chanting).
His natural selfless spirit lead him to a career in the medical field. His amazing eagerness and ability to learn and assimilate his studies earned him the respect of his professors who invited him to attend surgeries while still in his first year of medical school.

The emphasis of the course is on the practice of pranayama. The course starts with two practices a day for the first week, then increases to three practices a day. Each session lasts for 2 to 3 hours. The daily schedule includes: 12 basic asanas (self practice, limited time) Concentrated periods of advanced pranayama of progressive intensity Explanations and practice of mudras, bandhas and mantras Recitation of Sanskrit verses Satsang Practice of shat kriyas (cleansing techniques) Spiritual diary Likhita japa (mantra writing)
The ashram offers dormitory and shared twin room accommodation. The ashram does not have any space for camping. There are no single rooms available. The dormitories contain either 4, 6, or 8 beds with adjacent shared bathrooms. Four shared twin rooms with attached private bathroom are available. Note: couples are not allowed to share twin rooms during Teachers Training Courses, Advanced Teacher Training Course, and Sadhana Intensive. For all accommodation 2 bed sheets, a pillow, and pillow case are provided.
