It’s hard to describe the experience at Govardhan Ecovillage. This was my first visit to India and after working in Mumbai for a few days, I was just keen to get out of the city to spend time in a calmer environment. And I wasn’t disappointed.
My transfers were perfectly organised by Pradeep, and when I arrived he was there to personally give me a warm welcome, greeting me by name. Each evening he would politely check that I had everything I needed, and if I had any requests it would be delivered to my room immediately! Nothing was ever a problem.
On my first afternoon I got a full guided tour of the huge property, learning all about the sustainable management of this village. The buildings are constructed from bricks, which are made from mud onsite. Even the arched ceilings are beautifully constructed from bricks. They generate their own power and manage all their waste on site. Their cows are lovingly cared for and they make the most nutritious compost.
The food was absolutely delicious - not spicy but oh so tasty. The Ayurveda Health Clinic was a real treat - I had a couple of massages, but only after a careful assessment with a doctor about what my body really needed. Everybody I met was welcoming, humble and generous with their knowledge.
But most special of all, was visiting the temples for the morning and evening ceremonies. Initially I was not keen to get up at 4.30am but it was totally worth it. Sitting in the main temple, listening to the rise and fall of the mantras, surrounded by the aroma of incense as the monsoon rains poured down, is something I want to remember forever.
Arrive with an open mind and an open heart - leave with a whole new view of how it’s possible to live.
