Where do I begin….
This was the most special month of my life. On getting to Varkala, I couldn’t have been more happy for this little pocket of purity and beauty that is Shiva’s house (the yoga school). I had heard of many people going to TTCs in the area who had to leave theirs because they were run badly etc. and it only just made me realise how well I had chosen. And I had chosen from my home in England, only by reading reviews. So I would like to contribute and help anyone who was once in my position, looking for a TTC that is authentic, honestly and properly run, with incredible food and a calm, kind and caring atmosphere.
A little info which would be nice to know before choosing...
Shiva teaches all of the Asana classes, so the physical postures, himself. He is an incredible teacher. So kind, pure, energetic, light hearted (he was often making us laugh), so knowledgeable and a spiritually devoted being who will open up inner dialogues inside of you by simply ‘being’. He runs the whole program and organises the house and the external teachers who come in to teach philosophy etc. (all of which he has a very good relationship with, and this becomes clear why :)) He is always available whenever you need help, advice or just simple a chat. He is dedicated and his intentions are so pure.
The food prepared by Beena is something to note in itself, there is always more than enough, all is cooked using organic ingredients where he can find, and all cooked in coconut oil (so no vegetable oils at all!!). The selection of vegetable curries is always different and every day the spread was so exciting. The breakfast is also amazing, I will miss it, and I was fully satisfied after every meal, without fail!!
The weekly trips Shiva takes us on are absolutely magic. Guided by him and with such thought and care.
I knew absolutely nothing about Varkala as a place before going, and now after a month there, I feel like I know it back to front and I have grown to love it - even though it’s touristy and the cliff chaotic at times! It’s so easy for the TTC, it’s a great place to pop into and get a smoothie in a break time. I wouldn’t stay there for too long if I was just travelling as theres other places in India and especially Kerala which are definitely more interesting to me, but generally speaking I thought it was a perfect place to do a TTC. You’re busy throughout this month, and your life becomes your studies and practice, having somewhere super easy to pop out to every so often is kind of exactly what you want, especially as a beach destination and especially as a westerner. I made friends with the people who worked on the cliff and I came to love it for what it was.
The sense of community grows throughout the month in a beautifully evolving way. The house starts to feel like a home and the people you share this month with start to feel like Yogic family, including Shiva. This can definitely be a difficult month at times, but the atmosphere that lives in Shivas house is enough alone to lift you through it.
Thank you for this incredible month Shiva, I could never ever forget it, and I will be back🌀💛
