About Apneista Freediving And Yoga School

Apneista Freediving Bali is a free diving and yoga training school in Amed, East Bali. We are located directly at the beach with perfect waters for free diving. Courses from beginner to instructor level are offered, as well as training and yoga classes. Apneista is a community of Professional freediving trainers and Yoga teachers. We train mostly in Amed Bali, but also teach and run freediving and yoga courses elsewhere in Indonesia and abroad. We take great pleasure in sharing our passion and believe in adapting yoga and freedive training to suit individual needs. When we moved here in early 2010 Apneista was the first freediving school in Bali.

Since then we have been continuously improving our programmes and facilities and now believe we have the best freediving setup in S.E. Asia. See the testimonials page. We run most of our freedive training in and from our beautiful training space right on the beach at the best spot in Bali for freediving. We have a yoga sala and a funky café to chill out in between training sessions. See Our freedive training space for more details We see both Yoga and Freediving as life enriching and accessible activities for everyone, not just for the athletically gifted or spiritually minded. As much as possible we cater to the needs and interests of the individual while still making sure all safety aspects are dealt with in detail. There should be no mystery in either Freedive training or Yoga, students should know exactly what they are doing at all times.

Though we emphasis the meditative aspects, we believe strongly in the scientific basis of everything we teach, making use of the latest freedive training techniques and using oximeters for training purposes. We offer our own continuously expanding freedive curriculum with supplementary techniques taken from Yoga, meditation and neuro-psychology.

How to Get There

The easiest way to get from almost anywhere in the south is to drive up to Sanur on the bypass. When you get to the other side of Sanur on the bypass after about 2km you have to watch out carefully for a sign on the inside lane that sends you to Padangbai Gianyar, turn right, then immediately right again to drive towards the North. Stay on the coast road all the way up, if you drive inland it’s much slower. Keep going… All the way the North, don’t turn off right for Padangbai. And drive all the way to Amlapura at the entrance to Amlapura centre you turn right up towards to Tirta Gangga (famous water palace). Continue all the way to the small village of Culik (pronounced Chulik). In Culik centre turn right and keep driving on the main road, go past Amed café and continue until you reach us Apneista just 2 doors before Divers Café in Jemeluk village. Our GPS coordinates are -8.337089 (or south 8.337089) and east 115.658650.

Amazing experience, New way to explore mind-body connection. I deepened my experience and skill everytime I went in the water. This course transformed the way I think about open water, gave me the confidence and ability to really enjoy diving. I’m very grateful to my teachers for their support and knowledge. Loved every minute of it!

As a scuba diver since 96′ I’ve logged well over 7000 hours underwater, though the feeling I had free diving with Apneista will always be one of my most memorable underwater experiences. One of my favourite films is Luc Bessons The Big Blue and while free diving with Matthew Smyth I really got the Big Blue Feeling. Yes the one where Jaques Mayol is on the bottom of the descent line looking around with a look of shear joy and ecstasy on his face. I highly recommend Apneista to anyone who is interested in the ocean, yoga or meditation as the 3 are all interlinked and come together so well with the Apneista free diving course. I’ve been back numerous times since. Thanks for the Big Blue Feeling!

Fantastic course, great training helped me achieve more than I had hoped to and has given me lots to go away with. Great venue & great people as well will definitely be back for more freedive training as I feel I have lots more to get out of this. Absolutely stoked with what I achieved Thank you.

Since I was a little child, I was not able to put my face under water. I even could not swim in a lake because of being afraid of the depth. I remember myself sitting on the shore and not being able to put the mask on my face. I was terrified of even the thought of going out in the water and that was the first day. On the third day I found myself in 17m depth holding on to the rope and … surprise: I loved it!!! I would not call myself a “freediver” but I am able to do snorkelling on my own and even doing duck dives to go further down to explore the world down there holding my breath with a smile on my face. This course has been life changing for me and it opened up a whole new world!

The feeling when immersed under so much blue leaves you speechless. The beat of your heart slowing down, bringing in the relaxed feeling. The secluded aquatic environment seeming infinitely mysterious, providing space for inward and outward observation. Being at the bottom, and looking up to see the rays of light trying to break through the water. Becoming as fluid as the surrounding itself and realizing that the creatures living there are not even aware of your presence. Letting yourself having full control over your body and being amazed of what your body can do. That, is what happens to me during freediving. That probably explains why I love it so much. And I can’t thank you enough for giving me the experience.
