Lasika Shodana is a treatment designed to assist the workings of the Lymphatic system, which plays an essential part in our immunity. If our lymphatic system isn’t working properly, it can cause a build-up of fluid in tissues as well as more serious medical problems like lymphagitis and lymphoma.
The gentle and rhythmic strokes that are part of this treatment, increase the process of lymph drainage through the body, thus promoting detoxification, regeneration and nourishment of cells and tissues and a support for our immune system.
According to Ayurveda, Marmas are subtle points or junctions in the body where life force or Prana is concentrated or flows together. The aim of Marma Therapy is to unblock energetic pathways and to integrate Body, Mind & Spirit. Ayurvedic enemas play an extremely important role in reestablishing balance to the body. There are different types of vastis, usually consisting of herbal decoctions or herbal oil or a combination of both. They are either strengthening and lubricating or cleansing by nature. Cleansing enemas are retained for as long as possible (usually 5-10min), while oil enemas can stay in the body for absorbtion. Vasti is the best treatment to balance vata. It is a safe way to treat the colon – due to the fact that it not only eliminates any excess waste from the colon, but also cleanses and nourishes it.
Swedana literally translates to “perspire”. The main purpose of Swedana is to increase body temperature and to open the system of channels (srotas and nadis) in the body. This gets toxins to move from shakha to koshta or from the tissues to the digestive tract from where they then can be lead out of the body through one of the cleansing actions that are part of Pancha Karma.
Swedana is useful for all conditions of stagnation, coldness and stiffness. Sweating also reduces fat tissue and thus assists in weight loss.
Kati Basti is one of the treatments from a group called external oleation therapies (Snehana). In this particular treatment, medicinal oil is heated and held in place by a ring of dough that is placed around a specific area of the patient’s back. It is used mainly for disorders of the lumbar/sacral region, including slipped disc, sciatica or other spinal related problems and can give quick pain relief.
This treatment is designed specifically for skin cleansing and rejuvenation. A specialized all-natural, herbal pack is used on face and neck to deeply exfoliate your skin, followed by a facial treatment with ayurvedic oils and ingredients infused with herbs. The result is a clean, strengthened and rejuvenated skin that looks younger and more dynamic.
Abhyanga generally means oil massage in Ayurveda and it is recommended to massage the body daily between 5-15 min as a personal routine to prevent disease, aging and degeneration. When Abhyanga is applied in order to treat existing imbalances, the duration of the massage can be up to 1 hour. The rhythmic strokes of the therapist, combined with the medicinal qualities in the oil help to relieve joint- and muscle stiffness, increase blood circulation, speed up the removal of metabolic waste, calm vata related problems and can help with anxiety, fatigue, circulatory disorders, arthritic problems, backaches and many injuries.
The word ela or patra means leaf. Kizhi or pinda means bundle or poultice.
Elakizhi is a type of sudation therapy using various parts from plants like Moringa (Drumstick), Tamarind, Castor Plant (Ricinus Communis) Pongamia Pinnata (Indian Beech) and Calotropis Gigantean (Crown Flower). The preparation involves chopping and mixing the herbs with rock salt, warming them in sesame oil and tying them up in a linen bundle. The bundle (Kizhi) is then used for fomentation. This form of treatment is very useful in relieving body pain and stiffness. It also improves blood circulation, skin complexion & muscle strength. Some of the herbs used have anti-aging and rejuvenating properties and are very effective in neurological disorders, arthritis, spondylosis and similar conditions.
Navara is a type of rice known in India for its medicinal value. Kizhi means bundle or poultice.
Navarakizhi involves the fomentation of the body with a bundle of cooked rice. To prepare for this treatment, the rice is first boiled in a herbal milk decoction and then packed up in a cotton cloth. The bundle then gets heated in milk before application. After fomentation, warm medicinal oil is applied on the body.
This specific treatment is great for strengthening, rejuvenating and nourishing the body (tissues) and skin, improving muscle tone and blood supply and increasing immunity. It is also very effectively assisting in curing diseases of the nervous system as well as chronic rheumatism, osteoarthritis and gout.
An Indian head massage is a real treat due to its relaxing and soothing nature. It focuses on head, neck, face, shoulders, upper back and upper arms. These areas are all important energy centers of the body and a healing touch can have a very balancing effect, relieving stress and tension and can creating a sense of peace and well-being.
Udvarthanam is a massage using herbal powders. Various herbal powders are mixed with oil, milk or medicated juice and rubbed onto the skin and upwards towards the head. Ubtan improves blood circulation, reduces body weight and is also used in various skin diseases. Further to this, it helps curing hemiplegia and paralysis.
The term Shirodhara stands for a method of treatment in which a liquid is being poured across the forehead of a person in a rhythmic manner. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow). The choice of liquid for Shirodhara depends very much on the desired effect. It could be medicated oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water. Shirodhara deeply relaxes the nervous system, integrates brain functions, increases blood circulation to the brain, improves memory, nourishes the hair, scalp and sense organs, encourages sound sleep and generally calms body & mind.
Pizhychil means “squeezing” or “pouring”. In this type of treatment, warm and medicated oil is poured continuously onto the patient’s body or specific areas (but not the head) from pitchers. In olden times, people used cotton cloths to do this – thus the word “squeezing”. Pizhichil is used in rheumatic diseases, arthritis and all nervous disorders like paralysis, hemiplegia, Parkinson’s disease. It relieves body pain and muscle spasms, speeds up the healing of fractured bones, increases immunity, improves skin complexion, has anti-aging properties, is soothing, relaxing and rejuvenating.
