Kundalini-Yoga
The best of the gods, called Kundalini, slumbers in the base in the shape of a serpent entwined into three and a half spirals. So long as this powerful coil remains dormant, man remains ignorant like an animal, and any number of yogic exercises will not lead to enlightenment.†(Hathayoga-Pradipika)Kundalini-Yoga means a discipline of the mind and the body. Its aim is to develop, through gradual stages, a quality of mind which can perceive reality and acquire self-knowledge through the healthy functioning of the mind and emotions. This demanding evolutionary process can be achieved by various practices known as “Ashtanga Yoga†(the Eightfold Yoga Path), using the methods of archaic Hatha-Yoga which will enable the Sadhaka (the spiritual seeker or accomplisher) to reach the steps of Raja-Yoga (Royal Yoga):
Kundalini-Yoga aims at the union of man with his transcendental, divine Self. To realize this goal it uses a synthesis of various paths of Yoga: the base is Hatha-Yoga, the forceful Yoga of power and exertion, combined with Bhakti-Yoga, the Yoga of devotion and love, Karma-Yoga, the Yoga of action, and Jnana-Yoga, the Yoga of knowledge and wisdom. The practice of Hatha-Yoga can result in the unique phenomenon of setting this Serpent Power in motion. “Kundalini†is a mysterious, abstract concept of Yoga, signifying the “Grand Potentialâ€. Even in spite of the great scientific, parapsychic and metaphysical interest it remains an enigma to modern science and medicine. The awakening of this dormant force results from the integration of the autonomous and voluntary nervous system, whereby the responses to the external and internal world are integrated. This causes motivation of many unsuspected and unexperienced faculties, which can lead to Self-realization.
Practice of Yoga bestows a threefold gain upon the aspirants: Physical strength, intellectual acumen and spiritual development. If somebody does not care for spiritual values, no matter. Spiritual development dawns automatically upon a person who succeeds in fully developing his or her physical and mental talents.
Asana
All the great teachers of Yoga have emphasised the importance of Yoga-Postures or Asanas. In the classical textbooks there are detailed descriptions of the significance, qualities, merits as well as the correct methods for the performance of Asanas. They assume new significance in modern times.
