I was visiting from Ohio where I teach various levels of hot vinyasa yoga, and in search of a studio to continue my practice. When I arrived at Annuttara, I was given a tour by a young woman that made my feel so at home and welcomed into the space - something that doesn't always happen when I try out a new studio. I loved the space in the back with a raw bar and seating for meditation. I took vinyasa annuttara at 1:15 on Wednesday the 29th, aware that I was taking a class that would have little instruction. I was advised to take a space away from the mirror because I was new to this particular class. Things started off in a state of total yoga bliss - the music was great, I knew enough sanskrit to follow what the instructor was saying and get out of my own head - but I would never advise someone to come to this particular class unless they were very advanced. About 50 minutes into our 90 minute flow, things started to get very bad. I teach a class that is heated to 101 degrees and 40% humidity, and we FAR exceeded this heat and humidity here. Being a hot yoga teacher, I tried to stay in the room and keeping moving, but I was sick to my stomach, my vision was going black, and eventually people who appeared to be regulars started leaving the room. I stayed until the 75 minute mark but left briefly to leave water and attempt to catch my breath - my heart was racing. As someone who practices heated yoga 6 days a week every week, this was really overwhelming for me to feel so very overheated. I write this post because at the end of class, even regular students commented to me that it never gets that hot and she was feeling ill. We told the instructor and she opened the door with about 10 minutes left so some heat could get out. What started as a Top 5 yoga experience for me turned into a complete nightmare where I feared for my safety. I still give this studio 4 stars in spite of that because they truly did a fantastic job in every other way - I ended up sitting out back with a house kombucha and waited an hour to drive home so I wouldn't pass out at the wheel. The instructor - I believe it was Ana, connected with me after class and said to let her know to turn down the heat because she doesn't notice it. My only recommendation would be to please keep an eye on the bodies in the room and change the temperature if it's becoming that unsafe. I'd love to return here when I'm back in Boca for work, but I will be a little afraid that my concerns won't be addressed...
