In September 1992, at the invitation of Dharma friends in Dallas, Master Hsing Yun established the BLIA Dallas chapter, and in 1993, purchased a three-story office building with 35,000 square feet of space in Richardson. The Master personally conducted the inauguration ceremony on September 11, 1994 which has since provided a spiritual home to Buddhist practitioners in north Texas.
Fo Guang Shan International Buddhist Progress Society (IBPS) in Dallas upholds Venerable Master Hsing Yun s ideals: To propagate Buddhist teachings through cultural activities, to nurture talents through education, to benefit societies through charitable programs, and to purify human hearts and minds through Buddhist practices. With these goals as guidelines, IBPS Dallas has strived to promote various Dharma propagation activities.
Facilities established at the center include a school, dining hall, tea house, main shrine, compassion hall, memorial hall, lecture hall, and library, all of which are skillful means for benefiting people from all walks of life. In order to nurture the spiritual lives of Dallas members and to help them realize Buddhism in their daily lives, IBPS Dallas offers many programs such as meditation classes, chanting, transcription of sutras, repentance ceremonies, the taking of the three refuges and five precepts, and the eight precepts retreat. Through hearing and experiencing Buddha Dharma, members could further develop their wisdom. Through repentance services, members could cultivate merits.
Through taking precepts, members’ spiritual interests can be elevated and can become a true Buddhist with the right view. The Buddhism programs offer bilingual meditation classes, Dharma lectures, sutra study classes, reading clubs, and children’s Buddhism classes. The center focuses on moral development for children and emphasizes spiritual development of adults. Besides providing Buddha Dharma classes, the center also promotes the quality of life.
Direction: From monastic to laity: To extend to lay followers the opportunity to support the Triple Gem, to spread Buddhist culture, and to propagate the Dharma. From monasteries to society: To penetrate society and the human mind; let compassion, moral discipline, wisdom, and mindfulness be the sources of strength for purification of the human spirit. From self-cultivation to helping others: To encourage fellow Buddhists to practice the dual cultivation of happiness and wisdom for self-enlightenment, and at the same time, rely on compassion and knowledge to benefit others. From passiveness to involvement: To emulate the spirit of the Buddha by being active and optimistic in dealing with life, thus giving others confidence, hope, joy, and convenience. From disciples to teachers: To train lay followers in skill and wisdom through educational programs so that they too can be competent propagators. From our country to the world: The Mahayana spirit is “to emancipate all beings prior to self-salvation.” We are to follow this glorious tradition with firm conviction and a vision that extends across the world. Let us strive to realize the ideal of “letting the Buddha’s Light shine over the three thousand realms and the Dharma’s current flow throughout the five continents.
The IBPS Dallas dining hall is opened since 1994, and is setup as a community style dining. To promote a healthy lifestyle and a more peaceful environment, the Dining Hall serves a vegetarian lunch buffet from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm Monday through Sunday except Saturday. You are cordially invited to come and experience these light and healthy foods. Our vegetarian buffet doesn’t include any onions and garlic because those are considered mind altering, and in order to reach a state of ultimate peace those foods are not allowed.
