In the West, we mostly practice Hatha-the branch of yoga that focuses on training the body through postures (asanas), and the mind through concentration (dharana.) Breathing techniques (pranayama) are used as a tool to harness energy and focus attention. Hatha Yoga cleanses and strengthens the body, deepens internal awareness, and promotes clarity and relaxation. Most of the styles below are essentially Hatha but bear different names given to them by the teachers who created the specific styles. NYSY offers a variety of different classes and levels.
