This is the swedanam with poultice of from herbal leaves. The leaves are made into small pieces and prepared in medicinal oil along with slices of lemon, curcuma powder, grated coconut, mustard, etc and poultice is made. This poultice is dipped in medicinal oil and applied all over the body. In podikizhi herbal powder is used.
This is the most unctuous type of snehata (oileation) and swedana combination. Special rice called Njavara is cooked well in milk and herbal decoct ional poultice is prepared. This poultice is dipped in milk and herbal decoction applied all over the body. This treatment is beneficial in treating poliomyelitis, facial palsy, hemiplegial and other degenerative muscular disorders and muscular atrophy/dystrophy. It improves the muscle tone and nourishes muscles.
Dhara means flowing of ayurveda oils, herbal decoctions, butter milk, milk, etc. If this treatments is done using Ksheera (Milk) it is known as “Ksheeradhara”. If the dhara is done for the forehead above forehead it is then called as ‘Sirodhara’, and for the whole body it is known as “Sarvangadhara”. All dhara are done after applying warm oil all over the body.

Abhayangam is a process by which the whole body is oileated with required type of medicated oil, followed by gentle massage in seven different body postures, applying specific pressure and movements. The recipient is made to lie on a wooden bed called ‘Dhroni’ while undergoing the treatment and special care is given to the foot massage giving special emphasis to the sole of the feet. Oil should be chosen according to the season and the personal constitution(prakruti). Sesame oil is the best for massaging according to Ayurveda. In the winter one can also use mustard oil, though it should not be used in summer. Cocunut oil is also good for massaging in a hot climate. People with a Vatha type of body should use warm oils, and those with Pitta type will benefit from cool oils. The Kapha types should have dry massage or should use mustard oil after warming. The pouring of milk is done by using a special pitcher with nozzle and is continued for 45 to 60 minutes.
