It is the external application of medicated choorna or paste on the body with affordable pressure massage generally in prathiloma direction (in the direction towards the heart). In pizhichil, lukewarm medicated oil is poured continually and uniformly over the body from a defined height and simultaneously massaged by skilful hands. It has an advantage of producing snehana (oleation) and swedana(sudation) simultaneously. It is both rejuvenating as well as curative. This treatment increases blood circulation and strengthens muscles and nerve tissues.

Milk or medicated milk is poured over body in this procedure. It can be done as ekanga (regional) dhara, sarvanga (whole body) dhara or sirodhara (head). This treatment is good for curing neurological condition, burning neuropathy, burning sensations, peri-menopausal syndrome, psychological diseases, insomnia, relieving mental tension and headaches.

Hot oil is applied to the whole back and the masseur works carefully up the spine, then the waist and shoulder areas which are often stressed and in need of attention.

Dhanyamlam is the fermented liquid obtained after fermenting cereals and other medicinal herbs. It is a type of sarvangadhara (Hot fomentation given by pouring hot or warm medicated liquids over the body in the form of a stream). It is highly effective in providing relief in pain swelling and stiffness associated with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (Amavatha), osteoarthritis (sandhigathavatha), low back pain, myalgia, fibromyalgia and other types of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal diseases. It rejuvenates and energizes the body.

Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic treatment which helps in calming the “third eye.” The term ‘Shirodhara’ is derived from the two Sanskrit words: ‘shiro’, meaning head, and ‘dhara’, meaning to flow. In this therapy medicated oils are allowed to stream on to the forehead and on to the entire scalp from a specific height for specified period of time after a therapeutic head massage is performed. This is one of the most popular among Ayurveda therapies, as it not only enhances mental relaxation but also cools the head, paving the way for a restful sleep.

Takradhara is a variety of sirodhara, in which medicated buttermilk is poured over the forehead or over the whole body. This treatment not only cools the head but also provides good sleep. It is also useful in curing skin disorders, diabetic neuropathy, depression, dandruff, tension headache, alcoholism, eczema, menopausal syndrome like hot flushes.

Podikizhi is an Ayurvedic technique of fomentation in which the whole body or certain parts of the body are fomented and made to sweat, by the application of medicinal powders. It stimulates muscles and nerve endings and thereby relieving pain. This therapy is useful to treat generalized body pain, stiff joints, low back ache, sciatica and similar ailments.

Elakizhi or Patrapotala Sweda is a rejuvenating sudation practice in Ayurveda treatments using fresh leaves of herbal/medicinal plants. Elakizhi is useful to treat various kinds of arthritis, spondylitis, generalized body pain, stiff joints, low back ache, sciatica, sports injuries and for all other soft tissue inflammations especially joint pains. Dhoomapanam is the inhalation of medicated smoke through nose which enhances sense of smell. It is usually done for vitiated kaphadosha (humor) especially in the respiratory system. It can clear the respiratory pathways. Dhoomapanam can be done as an individual procedure and as post purifactory therapies. It is indicated as both preventive and therapeutic measures in ENT disorders.

This means application of medicine to the lower eyelids to protect the eye from eye disorders. It improves eyesight and enhances the natural beauty of eye. In anjana, prolonged tissue contact of medicine will give maximum absorption and bioavailability. its action is similar to sub-conjunctival injections. Indications are heaviness of eyes, dense discharge from eyes, itching, dull pain, growth in cornea.

Application of medicated paste in the vertex for a specific period is called as thalam. It can be done as an individual therapeutic procedure or as a pre and post procedure for other external therapies. In thalam, suitable drugs or medicated powders mixed with suitable medicated oils or medicinal decoctions or herbal extracts is applied on vertex.

In this therapy, herbal paste boundary is made on the lower back and specific warm medicated oil is poured into it. A series of treatment is recommended to treat back pain and spinal disorders. It acts effectively as it is applied at the site of lesion. Warm oil provides snehana (oleation) and swedana (sudation) effect and the herbal ingredients provide therapeutic effects.

Gandoosha is the holding of medicinal decoction/liquid/ oil in the buccal cavity for a certain period without gargling. In a healthy person it can be done as a regular practice (by using tilataila). In diseased person, the medicine should be selected according to the condition. Major benefit includes, nourishing the mouth, improves voice, increase the capacity of the tongue for taste perception, moisturize the mouth, lips etc, strengthens and stabilize the teeth and gums.

Kavalam is a procedure in which the medicine is held in the oral cavity followed by gargling for a certain period. It has almost all properties as that of gandhoosha.

The Snehapanam (internal oleation) is a preparatory procedure for Panchkarma therapies. The effectiveness of the Panchkarma or the purification therapies depends upon the proper mobilization of humors (Doshas) from the periphery (??kh?) which is to be achieved through this treatment. The therapy involves oral intake of medicated or non-medicated ‘Sneha’ or oil. Snehapanam is done in the morning after attending to the calls of nature, on an empty stomach. The dosage will depend on the health, age, diagnosed illness and digestive capacity of the patient. The treatment lasts between five and seven days depending on the condition of the patient and the illness being treated.

Virechana is one type of Sodhana (Purifactory) therapy. Virechanam cleanses the Pitta and purifies blood by clearing the toxins from the body. The treatment concentrates on the toxins that are accumulated in the liver and gall bladder and the gastro-intestinal tract. In Virechanam, the vitiated Doshas are eliminated through the rectum. The treatment is given in the morning after the person is given the “Snehapanam” and “Swedanam” for internal lubrication. The person is then given a certain prescribed dose of herbal medicines on an empty stomach. Within 1 to 2 hours, the bowels are emptied expelling all accumulated toxins with it. Virechanam is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, skin ailments, gout, splenic disorders, ulcers, IBS, gastritis, intestinal colic, headaches, asthma, indigestion, gynaecological disorders, hypertension and stress related ailments.

Nasyam is an important treatment for any discomfort in the head region. Nasyam is one among the 5 panchakarma (Purifactory) therapy. Nostrils are considered the doorway to the brain. It is a process by which the medicated oil is administered through the nostril, followed by a medicated gargle and herbal smoke. It is the only procedure which can directly influence the sense organs. Nasya karma gives oleation sudation and purifying effect simultaneously.Very effective for treating sinusitis, throat diseases, chronic colds, migraine, cervical spine disorders, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, paralysis, psychological disorders, eye and ear ailments, premature greying of hair, loss of smell and taste and even can add clarity to the voice.

Snehavasti is one among the five classical detoxification programme (Panchakarma) and specially recommended for Vata disorders. Medicated oils or ghritams are used to administer an oil enema, which nourishes and lubricates the body. The main seat of Vatadosha is the Pakwashaya (large intestine); therefore Vasti, the medicated oil enema, is the main therapy for all Vata disorders such as constipation, neurological ailments, paralysis, flatulence, lower backache, gout, and rheumatism.

In Kashayavasti, a herbal decoction made of honey, rock salt, medicated oil and herbs is administered through the anal route. A massage with warm herbal oils is given before the treatment. The treatment is administered as per prescribed dosage under supervision. The body dispels all toxins with the faecal matter. This treatment is particularly helpful in curing gastric and neurological disorders, acidity, acute and chronic aches, headaches, migraines and other degenerative disorders.
