Welcome to Yoga Awakening Africa
Well, we are here to share with you all the yoga knowledge that we collectively possess and acquire along the way. That means sharing with you information about styles of yoga, yoga studios, yoga teachers, yoga practices, yoga teacher training courses and other bits and bites we find.
Why are we doing this?
We LOVE yoga, we are dedicated to our practice and we want to share what we know with like-minded people.
Who are we?
Well, it’s me, Nina, (aka Neenz, happy chic or Nina the nut!), who started this crazy idea of ninadancerYoga Awakening Africa in 2008. I fell in love with yoga the moment I entered my first class (believe me, being the super fit, super stiff, tight hamstringy person, push-push-push, more-more-more athlete in a class with calm gentle and relaxed 60+ year-old’s who could hang out forever in Urdhva Prasarita Padasana – the candle, yes it did take me 10 years to learn that name! is where I realized I wanted to age gracefully just like them and so things had to change…). So after finishing my degree at UCT and retiring as a basketball player I put my business skills to the test and opened a yoga studio The Yoga Awakening Africa Studio in Tokai with my mom where we teach integral hatha yoga to all (yes even the stiff, shy, elderly and those who just-aren’t-too-sure-if-yoga-is-for-them kind of people…). So pop onto my personal site here to view class times in Tokai if you’re keen.
Then in my free time I started the Yoga Awakening Africa Magazine and from there transitioned it into an online portal – i.e. this blog :) The journey continued and seeing the need for Integral Yoga Teachers in South Africa I started The Academy of Yoga and Ayurveda with three other amazing yoga therapists where we offer a year long part time yoga teacher training course as well as regular workshops and mini-courses. This is a brilliant course of personal transformation, so even if you’re not keen on becoming a yoga teacher but would like to delve a little deeper and enjoy integral yoga then this is definitely for you!
Life is all about balance, and this is my current lesson. How to do less but be able to offer more, share more and be healthier… So watch the space for future projects and plans… there is always something lurking in this mildly pitta deranged being!
