BKS Iyengar
Iyengar Yoga is named after its founder, BKS Iyengar, who was born in in 1918. After a childhood illness, he began practicing yoga at the age of 15, under the guidance of the great yoga master, Shriman T. Krishnamacharya. His health improved rapidly, and soon afterwards he began to teach yoga at the instigation of his teacher.
Mr. Iyengar has a great influence on the global spread of yoga. In 2004 he was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Today, with over 90 years, he is still practicing daily, watching the classes at his institute in and writing books. In the 1960s, he published the book light on yoga, which became a bestseller and still today is a basic textbook of Hatha Yoga. His daughter Dr. Geeta Iyengar and his son Prashant Iyengar continued the work of their father and completed their own contributions.
