Shelby McDermott
In my approach to health and wellbeing, I teach in the same way as I strive to live; honestly and intelligently, with authenticity and creativity.
Using the expertise of my formal education and many years experience as a Radiologic Technologist, I utilize my “x-ray vision†of the skeletal structure to ensure proper body alignment to lead students safely through a yoga class. Combining my knowledge of the human body with an ongoing education in Yoga Therapeutics, Ayurveda, and the wisdom of yoga practice over the last 17 years, I create a unique and personal approach to yoga teaching.
I encourage students to discover their strengths and weaknesses in yoga class and to face their challenges in life. Through yoga I strive to teach the importance of greeting life’s obstacles with acceptance, truthfulness and love. I believe that through honoring and supporting our unique nature we can increase the vitality of our body, mind and spirit, and come to move in harmony with the environment we live in.
Background Education
Completion of Associates Degree in Medical Science to include Anatomy and Physiology at the AMEDD Center & School, Fort Sam Houston TX 5 years working in the radiology department including the emergency room, operating room and special procedures at various hospitals in the United States
Teaching Style
I draw my teaching inspiration from my life experiences and a synthesis of classical Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Viniyoga. Movement is synchronized with the breath, while a steady focus on the structural alignment of the individual human body is maintained. Special care is taken to determine what is appropriate and applicable for each student. I focus the creation of my sequences on the best way to safely open and engage the student’s body and mind, guiding them to greater self-awareness, focus, and expansion. In this way we are able to tune into our individual nature through breath awareness and maintain structural stability to prevent injury in the body. I utilize hands-on adjustments and demonstrations. Questions are always welcome during or after class.
Ayurveda Personal Approach
I am currently studying the Ayurvedic healing course offered by Dr. David Frawley from the American Institute for Vedic Studies. As an Ayurvedic Life-Style counselor I am able to assess Ayurvedic constitutional types and how to treat them and their common diseases through daily health regimens of diet, herbs, yoga, meditation and life-style recommendations. I am mentoring with Margo Bachman, attending workshops, classes and reading on a continual basis to deepen my experience and knowledge of the vast system of Ayurveda. I currently offer Ayurvedic Yoga Private classes.
What is Ayurveda:
Ayurveda is the traditional, holistic system of medicine from. It provides both curative and preventive measures towards optimal physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The word Ayurveda is from the ancientn language, Sanskrit, and literally means Knowledge of Life. Inherent in Ayurvedic principles is the concept that you are capable of taking charge of your own life and healing. More than simply medical care, Ayurveda offers a philosophy whereby one may prevent unnecessary suffering and live a long, healthy life. Known as the mother of all medical systems, Ayurveda has undergone continuous research, development and refinement over past 5,000 years. Preferring to focus on the type of person who has the disease, rather than just understanding the type of disease the person has, Ayurveda is a patient-orientated system of healing.
