Bodysattva - About Us
The term ‘Bodysattva’ was born out of this vision and, translated loosely from Sanskrit, pairs ‘body’ (bod-ee) with ‘sattva’ (sahtvah) or ‘awareness.’Sattva is a state of mind in which the mind is steady, calm and peaceful.
Sattva may be defined as pure existence, awareness, being, truth, intelligence, virtue, goodness, joy or simply put, the desire to practice and deepen the connection to and access our closest resource, our own body’s wisdom.
THE BODYSATTVA YOGA STUDIO
Yoga is a centuries old practice of controlled movement and breath. The physical part of the yoga, or Asana, involves awareness and control of postures, movement and sensation while sustaining controlled breath. Yoga develops strength, stamina, flexibility and body awareness combined with deeply relaxing meditative effects.

Pilates is a physical fitness and movement training program developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates to improve rehabilitation of World War I veterans. Based on yoga postures, calisthenics and other movement disciplines, he concentrated on conditioning the entire body, but because he believed in the importance of using the mind to control the body he called this system ‘Contrology’.
Pilates exercises focus on deep, core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and support the spine and organs. They integrate the awareness of breath and alignment of the spine in support of flowing movement.
The principles of Pilates’ system include alignment, centering, control, and effective breathing. Proper alignment promotes efficiency of movement. Centering allows for the energy to originate from what Pilates referred to as the ‘core’ or ‘powerhouse’. Control of the body enables smooth, efficient mastery of muscles, which leads to precision of movement. Finally, breath rejuvenates the blood, which keeps the body from stagnating.
At Bodysattva, we stay true to Joseph Pilates’ vision of rehabilitating the human body and optimizing its functions. Since each person’s body is unique, we design programs to enhance strength, flexibility and control in each individual. Unlike cookie-cutter gym programs where all bodies are treated the same, we dedicate our expertise to meeting personal goals and needs. Joe’s philosophy of ‘Contrology’ aligns perfectly with Bodysattva’s objective and mission: to understand and master our bodies
