The Kandy Samadhi Centre
kandy samadhi centre Samadhi Spa for the Spirit!
Fifty minutes northeast of Kandy the fertile landscape becomes a mass of lush vegetation reverberating with unfamiliar birdsong. The human populace too seem a different breed, profligate with smiles and allowing their abundant good sat sung to spill over and cloak the visitor. Go past the triangular ambalama and up the steps where you squeeze past the statue of a giant Hindu goddess - half woman, half horse.
Inside the entrance hall at Samadhi you are watched over by a silk tapestry depicting seven Buddhist monks each holding a lotus blossom in their hand. Each monk is a different shade of brown. Likewise, the cultural diversity of this island is reflected in the villagers, who form the core of what makes Samadhi run smoothly; they are unspoiled and courteous; every man, woman or boy will calmly break from sweeping the stone pathway, lighting the oil lamp or picking fresh produce for your lunch to wish you “Ayubowan!†the traditional Sinhala welcome which means “Let there be long life!â€
Samadhi weaves its magic on you from the moment you enter through the massive Kandyan doorway set into stone. Suri mama, the soft-spoken guardian of Samadhi and its Manager, is there to greet you. He is also resident artist who is responsible for the murals of Tantric art on the walls.
Samadhi nurtures the spirit, calms the mind
The inspiration for the design and architecture was born of meditation. And so you willingly leave your city husk behind at the gates…with no signal for mobile phones, it is the perfect opportunity to let nothing interrupt the sounds of forest birdsong, of tree frogs and crickets and the whisper of the breeze from the trees.
The thirteen pavilions, which lean out of the hillside, are veritable temples of tranquility. They are designed to make you feel you are the only person staying here. Privacy is everything. Yet there are no unnecessary walls.
This results in a truly serene environment surrounded by urns, art and treasures dating back to a time Kandy was a Royal realm. Here everything is king-sized. The Indonesian teak bed in a double room is spacious enough to sleep three people comfortably. But even the smallest suite provides a four-poster bed to dream in.
Surrender your senses
The spacious verandahs of each suite of rooms give onto paddy fields, nearby mountains and bench terraces filled with herb gardens or pineapples. Bamboos reach out with their four-fingered leaves to fan a breeze at you.
In the surrounding natural forest, Mango, Toddy Palm, Mahogany and Jak trees rub necks with giant bamboo, Avocado and Chinese Guava. The Kukul- Oya River meets the Hulu-Ganga, conveniently creating several spots for river bathing amongst the rocks and baby rapids. Here Plumbago (graphite) was found in lumps amongst the pebbles. But the locals had since been driven to eke out a meager living selling fruit and vegetables off roadside stalls.

Dayananda Ashram Rishikesh
Dayananda Ashram Rishikesh is situated on the banks of the Holy Ganga, away from the major tourist attractions. It is a unique centre for the study of Vedanta and Sanskrit; unique in the sense that the classes are conducted in English yet the adherence and reverence to the ancient tradition of teaching (Sampradaya) is total. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Siva as Gangadharesvara facing the Ganga. The main lecture hall also faces the Ganga. There is a library with more than 5000 titles on various subjects, i.e. Vedanta, Sanskrit Grammar, Indian and western philosphies, Religion and Yoga. There is also a Yoga studio where regular Iyengar Yoga camps are conducted.
The ashram was established during the 1960s by Swami Dayananda Saraswati, who is an internationally recognised teacher of Vedanta and foremost scholar of Sanskrit. Swamiji and his disciples conduct regular residential courses at the ashram with the focus on Bhagavad Gita and the ten principal Upanishads as commented upon by Adi Shankaracharya. These and selected ancillary texts are analysed and taught along with Sanskrit grammar in the Paninian style. Vedic chanting is also taught during courses.
In addition, throughout the year, a resident acharya holds daily discourses on the Upanishads, incorporating analytical examination of Adi Shankaracharya's commentaries.
Dayananda Ashram is the parent Vedanta institute of the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam group, established by Swami Dayananda. Known as Arsha Vidya Pitham it means a centre of learning based on the teaching of the ancient rishis.
Shri Santosh Puri Ashram
Santosh Puri Ashram was founded by Baba Santosh Puri and Mataji Narvada Puri in 1978. The ashram restored the first charitable pilgrim heritage – now forsaken – on the footpath from Haridwar to Badrinath. Badrinath is known as “the abode of the Gods” and its summit reaches a height of 4000 meters. Starting from a few crumbled buildings and a snake infested well, Baba Santosh Puri gradually built up an ashram that contains various buildings for housing people, dogs and cows, classrooms and meditation halls, and more.
Mataji and Babaji were married and have three children a son Ganga Puri, eldest daughter Mandakini Puri and youngest daughter Alaknanda Puri. Now they are running the ashram following their parents as their masters as an inspiration.
I am Bishakha from Bishram, which means to rest, but I am restless till I see you on the mat, practicing with me and learning Yogvidya. “Bishram Yoga Shala” is a Shala and not any Yoga center. It’s a practice room where everyone belongs to one family. We are all practitioners here in the Shala, students of the same subject “Yoga”. Every morning we see the light of the day and feel impatient till the time we reach the Shala and do our routine practice, to know more, to learn more and to do a little more.
For me, to practice Yog is to reach sublime. At our Shala, Yoga is believed to be our ‘Chikitsha Vidya’. We attempt to touch our conscience through physical as well as physiological intelligence and mindfulness. We attempt in invigorating motor and sensory nerves through physical alignment and thus connect to our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, healing our body and mind.
Learn this age-old art with a focus on aligning, detailing, mobility, endurance building, mantra chanting, proper breathing and invigorating health and harmony with its power.
I was blessed to this path in the year 2013 after my decade long working relationship (2005 to 2012) in Human Resources with organizations like Airtel, Essar, Times of India and Anandabazar Patrika Group.
Kolkata is my birthplace where I completed my studies. But for my work and Yoga, I moved and lived in other cities making them my home. I have traveled from Kolkata in the east to Gujarat and Mumbai in the west. I have stayed from Delhi in the north to Chennai and Kerala in the South. This was after I finished my Masters of Business Administration from Kolkata, Heritage Institute of Business Administration in the year 2005.
Today, Bishram Yogashala is the result of one remarkable moment in my life. Of meeting the great teacher Zubin Zarthoshtimanesh who is also a direct disciple of Guruji BKS Iyenger. I got the acceptance of my teacher and started learning the subject under his strict and close guidance at his Shala in Mumbai from the year 2008 while I was still working.
The years of working and relationships I had in the corporate environment only made me impatient. There was no escape for my restlessness till the time I found “Bishram”. My mind answered, “This is the only purpose of my life”.
I am a registered Yoga teacher from International Yoga Academy in the year 2017 and have also received teacher’s training certificate from Ghosh’s Yoga College in Hatha Yog, in the year 2018, under the tutelage of Muktamala Mitra, granddaughter of Bishnu Charan Ghosh, who was the brother of the Great Yogi Paramhansa Yogananda, the author of – ‘An Autobiography of a Yogi.’
Iyengar Yoga, named after and developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama). The development of strength, mobility and stability is gained through the asanas.
By paying close attention to the finer points of anatomy and alignment of each pose, Iyengar Yoga emphasises the practice of precision.
Poses are held for long periods and often modified with props.
