Punyah Yoga offers Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga residential Teachers’ Training Courses (TTC) located in the valleys of the Himalayan Mountains in the district of Tapovan, Rishikesh in India.
The school follows the ancient Gurukala system, a traditional Indian practice where the teachers and students will live in the same place for the duration of the course. This way, students can closely interact with our dedicated teachers and staff that have immersed themselves in the yogic lifestyle.
The curriculum of our programme is extensive enough to cover both theory and practice. The curriculum stems from an ancient teaching principle (Guru Parampara) where knowledge and theory are passed down from a Guru to a disciple through thousands of years. Devotional practices, genuine to the tradition of India, constitute an integral part of the course.
We have prepared and carefully structured the school and course to be optimal and conducive for reflective learning. We have set the school around stunning natural beauty -- away from the distractions of city living. The school offers vegetarian/vegan food, prepare a fitting space for learning and encourage daily yoga and meditation.
A sincere desire to learn and openness to yogic techniques is required – basic knowledge of yoga postures and philosophy is helpful, but not essential.
Upon completion of the course, Graduates will be given an Internationally-Recognized Certificate as issued by the Yoga Alliance for the 200 Hours Standard for Registered Yoga Schools (RYS).
Punyah Yoga offers 100-hour Teacher’s Training Course – a two-week course for those who are new to Ashtanga Yoga practice or would like to deepen their knowledge by going through the details of each movement. Hatha yoga is a branch of Yoga and is one of the six schools of Hinduism. The word Ha?ha literally means “force” and thus alludes to a system of physical techniques.
Our aim is to teach an authentic Vedic system of yoga. We believe that retaining the vitality of the body is a result of the discipline and not the goal. The system philosophies are summarized in 5 principles.
Proper exercise: Asanas
Proper breathing: Pranayama
Proper relaxation: Savasana
Proper diet: Vegetarian. A yogic diet is encouraged, limited to sattvic foods, void of rajasic foods as well as tamasic foods.
Positive thinking and meditation
The course is for anyone who is interested in a non-dynamic type of yoga such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga. Hatha Yoga is static, and it helps create a strong foundation to start your yoga journey to advance postures.
Taking a 100-hour 2-week course helps you go deeper into your awareness and create lots of mindfulness when you are practising postures.
Modules included as part of this two-week course are Yoga Philosophy, Yoga Nidra, Body Alignment and Adjustments, and meditation.

Body Adjustment and Alignment are very important as modern day living has upset our body posture to a great extent.
More recently, we have acquired many luxuries and live in an environment that is slowly damaging our breathing patterns, postures and overall health. Traditionally, people did not have the luxury of a well cushioned sofa, numerous pillows, fancy upholstered chairs and thick mattresses on our beds — people used to sit with crossed legs and slept on hard surfaces that kept their postures and made the spine straight. Not only do we not have the availability of fresh air we used to have decades back, we have forgotten how to breathe properly! When breath is ‘lacking’, many emotions are held at the surface. Our Prana will not move into a deeper state so we cannot breathe properly.
Proper posture keeps the body young and healthy and proper breathing is also an important one to note. Therefore, the role of Body Adjustment and Alignment is more important than ever. Using this tool gives us a better understanding of our body by boosting mindfulness and awareness. It helps our energy to flow freely and equally into our body. By practising under a master, they can help you recognise the energies of the body, expand your breathing pattern, unlock body awareness and help you in your asana practice.
This course runs during the first two weeks of every month. Practitioners who enrol for this program must start from 1-7th and 8-15th.
We offer a one week course for those who are new to Ashtanga Yoga. It gives participants an opportunity to explore this beautiful type of yoga through a combination of proper movement and breathing.
