THE NEW KADAMPA TRADITIONGeshe-La Teaching This center is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU), a Mahayana Buddhist tradition founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso that is derived from the Buddhist meditators and scholars Atisha and Je Tsongkhapa. NKT is an association of study and meditation centers dedicated to helping people everywhere find meaning and purpose in their lives, and to the developing of genuine inner peace and happiness. Putting Buddha’s teachings into practice in the context of our family and work commitments, we discover they are unsurpassed methods to resolve daily difficulties and problems. There is absolutely no prerequisite that attendees of Kadampa Centers consider themselves Kadampas or even Buddhists. Our Founder – Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Geshe Kelsang Gyatso (born 1931, above) is a Tibetan Buddhist monk who has been resident in the West since 1977. He is a realized Buddhist master who has written 21 highly acclaimed books on Buddhism and meditation. All New Kadampa Tradition Centers, including ours, rely upon Geshe Kelsang’s books and teachings. You can read a more extensive biography of Geshe Kelsang here.
