Zen Center Of Denver
Welcome to the online home of the Zen Center of Denver. We are a Buddhist sangha (community) offering Zen Buddhist practice and training. The Zen Center of Denver is associated with the Diamond Sangha, an international affiliation of practice centers and teachers in the Harada-Yasutani line of Zen Buddhism, as taught and transmitted by the Western Zen pioneer Robert Aitken.
The primary practice of the Zen Center of Denver is zazen, seated meditation. Zazen is the heart of Zen practice and is both the full expression of inherent enlightenment and the means of uncovering that enlightenment. However, Zen practice is not just sitting in stillness; it is expressed in all our daily activities. This is particularly important at a lay (non-monastic) center.
Along with regular morning and evening sittings, the ZCD offers a full range of opportunities for Zen training, including dokusan (private instruction with a teacher), samu (work practice), zazenkai (all-day sittings), and sesshin (week-long retreats).
As of Aug. 31, 2015, the Zen Center of Denver is no longer situated in our old 31st Ave. location, having sold that building. We have since purchased a new property in the DU area and are working on designing a new center; until it is built, however, we are using two locations as temporary practice spaces: the Mayu Sanctuary (1804 S. Pearl St.) and the Rocky Mountain Miracle Center (1939 South Monroe St.). Please check the calendar or the Upcoming Events sidebar to determine which location is being used that day.
Ps: The Pilates Studio
The Pilates Method is more than a workout. It is a continuum of mindful movements that strengthen from the inside out and head to toe. Pilates focuses around six main principals: Centering, Control, Concentration, Precision, Breath and Flow. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, he originally called it Contrology. Eventually, he invented equipment that incorporated spring-loaded resistance to his exercise regimen. These movements and machines are constantly evolving and improving while keeping true to the core elements and philosophies that make the Pilates Method so powerful.
At The Pilates Studio, we integrate all of the traditional and modern Pilates equipment into our sessions. The key to a complete Pilates practice is becoming familiar and versatile on any apparatus. We utilize the Reformer, Chair, SpringBoard, Jumpboard, Mat, Small Props, Weights and Balls… making each and every session unique! With a maximum of 7 people in a group, sessions are small & personal allowing the teacher to focus on proper movement mechanics and the safety of each and everybody.
The Pilates Studio offers Private & Group Sessions to fit each and every individual. Choose a Session type that honors what your body is today, what you strive it to be tomorrow and how you want to maintain it forever.
Starting your Pilates practice off right is essential. If you are new to Pilates, we highly reccommend starting with a private session or one of our p.s. fundamentals group sessions. Please use the descriptions below to help you choose a session that is right for you.

Meditation — or familiarizing ourself with positivity — is at the heart of Buddhism. By practicing Buddhist meditation we are protected from the suffering caused by our so-called ‘delusions’ – unpeaceful, uncontrolled states of mind such as anger, attachment and ignorance that give rise to nothing but suffering. We also learn how to develop and maintain our peaceful, positive states of mind such as patience, love and wisdom, and in this way fulfill our innate potential for happiness and freedom, including the ability to help others. Anyone with a mind can do this, regardless of their background, culture or even belief system.

What is Pilates?
Joseph Pilates, born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880, dedicated his life to physical fitness. After overcoming childhood illness and disease and working as a nurse during the first World War, Pilates created a type of exercise to strengthen the core and realign the body. Core strength emanates from the muscles that lie from the pelvis into the rib cage and diaphragm. Joseph Pilates theorized that if one could make the core muscles of the body, primarily the abdomen and back, strong while at the same time toning the other muscle groups and promoting flexibility, then one could overcome a myriad of health problems as well as achieve an optimum level of fitness.
Sharing the Pilates tradition, inspiring individuals and teaching the endless potential of the moving body is what Pilates Aligned is all about. The Aligned Lifestyle By combining deep core strengthening with stretching, coordination, control and balance, our private and group lessons work to reshape and re-educate your body, creating long, lean muscles and strong, flexible joints, improving postural alignment and establishing intelligent, graceful movement patterns. Cross Training – Enhances performance by maintaining proper skeletal alignment and muscular balance, while increasing joint mobility, blood flow, body awareness and injury prevention. Injury Rehabilitation – Widely recommended by medical professionals because Pilates is proven to help reduce pain caused by spinal injures and dysfunctions, disc and joint disease, fibromyalgia and other chronic pain syndromes.
Weight Loss and Body Sculpting – Pilates is an anaerobic form of exercise that uses deep and precise breathing instruction to increase endurance and boost metabolism. Toning and lengthening muscular tissue changes your shape and often leads to weight loss.
Why do Pilates?
There are exercise programs that will improve your posture and flexibility. There are programs that will sculpt your body, increase your core strength and help you lose weight. And still others that aid circulation and ease pain. But one was designed to do them all. Pilates.
The Pilates Method was created by Joseph H. Pilates and his wife Clara during their 60 year search for the perfect exercise program. Today, you’ll find Pilates being offered in hospitals, universities and private studios like Pilates Aligned all around the world. It’s a full body workout practiced by millions for both fitness and injury post-rehabilitation.Joseph Pilates wasn’t boasting when he wrote, “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see a difference and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.†Pilates works.
THE PILATES METHOD CONCEPT
To be able to execute any Pilates exercise fully you must focus all of your attention on specific body parts to achieve their full movement potential. This builds muscle tone as well as a heightened awareness of your body, gaining balance and coordination.
During a Pilates session you will be cued to “feel†or to engage places in your body that have been dormant. This leads to an “internal shower†or flushing of the body where movement and circulation are occurring. Pilates believed that you could only become healthy and fit if you learned to train your mind to control the actions of your body.Strengthening your center decompresses the spine and joints, which promotes more oxygenation of your system, improves posture, poise, and balance, as it allows the energy in your body to flow.
The equipment was designed by Joseph Pilates to isolate core stabilizing muscles while providing feedback and contact for the body. His brilliant creations use springs, straps and wheels to develop, align and tone the body as a whole with strength and precision. Pilates exercises are performed with and without the use of the equipment.
We are proud to announce that our studio is fully functioning with Classical Pilates Equipment made from sustainable bamboo and locally handcrafted in Colorado by our friends at Root Manufacturing.
Annie, owner and founder of Evolve Pilates, received her training from The Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado after completing over 1,500 hours in Classical Pilates instruction. Prior to her certification, Annie practiced Pilates for 18 years to build strength and core stability. After suffering a low back injury riding horses, she underwent surgery in 2007 and fully committed herself to Pilates as a form of physical therapy. Annie believes Pilates not only strengthens and heals the body but also calms the mind and elevates the spirit. She enjoys teaching all bodies and all ages, with a goal to build confidence and strength in life outside the studio.

What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and improve overall health. In the words of Joseph Pilates, “In ten sessions, you’ll feel the difference, in twenty you’ll see the difference, and in thirty you’ll have a new body.â€

Pilates is different than traditional strength training. Joseph Pilates built his method of exercise around six principles that incorporate core strengthening and control rather than weight and repetitions that can damage tissues and result in injury. First introduced in the early 1900s to help dancers heal and recover, Pilates programs have continued to develop modern interpretations to help all body types gain whole body wellness.

If new to Pilates, private sessions are the most effective way to begin exploring the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning.
Semi-private sessions include two clients and are designed for people who are ready to learn in a slightly larger setting than in private sessions. Semi-private sessions are best suited for two clients who are compatible and have about the same knowledge of Pilates.Equipment classes include instruction on the Pilates apparatus, the reformers and towers. These classes consist of two to seven students to maintain personal guidance and safety within a group setting (four private sessions are required prior to attending these classes).Mat classes consist of classes of two to seven (+) students and are recommended for all interested in Pilates. Mat classes are performed simply on a mat. Without the assistance of spring resistance used in equipment classes, beginning and advanced students will both find that the Pilates mat repertoire will truly challenge the body to work from within.
